The Skills Development Advisor is a vital role within the TRIO-Student Support Services-Disabled Project at San Diego State University. This position is responsible for coordinating the daily functions of academic advising and retention initiatives, ensuring that disabled and disadvantaged students effectively access university resources and project services to improve their academic and personal progress.
Key Responsibilities
Coordinate academic, career, and support services for students with disabilities
Develop and present workshops on various academic topics, including study skills, financial literacy, and career development
Conduct outreach activities to engage students who are not accessing project services or are on leave of absence
Provide case management and document case notes for students
Collaborate with the Project Director to manage program activities and services, including academic advising, financial literacy advising, career counseling, and graduate school admission counseling
Advise students in developing student success plans to meet their academic and career goals
Document and record participant records, including contact logs, case notes, and files
Requirements
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in education, counseling, educational leadership, or a related field
Two years of professional student services work experience or related field; a master's degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience
One year of experience working in a TRIO federal program or similar related program/project for disadvantaged and at-risk college students
Working Conditions
The Skills Development Advisor will work in a fast-paced environment, collaborating with students, faculty, and staff to provide support services and promote student success. This position requires strong communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
