Job Summary

The Student Academic Success Specialist will play a vital role in supporting the enrollment, retention, and engagement of first and second-year students at The California State University. Under the general supervision of the College Student Success Center Managing Director, this individual will provide academic advising and success coaching to a cohort of students during their first 60 units.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide holistic academic advising and support to a cohort of students, utilizing a strengths-based approach and case management strategy to establish a working relationship.
  • Implement a proactive contact plan with multiple touch-points throughout the academic year to build rapport and ease transition for first-year students.
  • Introduce and orient students to academic requirements, planning tools, and campus resources, assisting them in creating educational goals and interpreting policies and procedures.
  • Develop and implement a student communication plan that aligns with university policies, deadlines, and events, ensuring timely support and guidance.
  • Participate in college and university-wide programs and events that promote student success, equity, and diversity.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of individual and group behavior, interviewing techniques, and effective academic advising strategies.
  • Strong organizational and programming skills, with the ability to quickly learn and understand complex university regulations and policies.
  • Excellent advising and counseling skills, including active listening, problem identification, and conflict resolution.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends, as needed.
Required Qualifications
  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a behavioral science, public or business administration, or a related field.
  • Two years of professional experience in student services or a related field, with a master's degree in a job-related field potentially substituting for one year of experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Educational Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related discipline.
  • Three or more years of progressively responsible experience in academic advising and support, preferably in a post-secondary setting.
  • Experience in student development theory, outreach practices, and student success services, with a focus on lower-division students and General Education.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication, relationship building, and student service skills, with the ability to work effectively in a diverse multicultural environment.
Compensation

Classification: Student Services Professional II
Anticipated Hiring Range: $4,610/month - $5,047/month
CSU Salary Range: $4,610/month - $6,556/month
