POSITION SUMMARY
The role involves collaborating with the school age team to design and execute age-appropriate educational activities that promote holistic development within the childcare setting. This position emphasizes fostering children's readiness through social, emotional, cognitive, physical, and language development while ensuring a secure and nurturing learning atmosphere. Engaging families and enhancing connections among children, families, and the community is also a key focus.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintain a comprehensive understanding of the Suburban/SMOC Child Care philosophy along with all relevant regulations and performance standards (EEC, NAEYC, and QRIS) applicable to the designated classroom.
- Assist the classroom team in planning, preparing, and executing an effective learning environment that nurtures and challenges each child's growth.
- Engage in professional development opportunities to enhance staff skills and knowledge.
- Maintain open communication with supervisors, sharing all relevant information promptly.
- Observe and document children's behaviors to assess skills and tailor plans to meet individual and group needs, identifying areas of concern and participating in necessary interventions.
- Evaluate classroom requirements for equipment, materials, and supplies, reporting findings to the lead teacher or supervisor.
- Ensure the classroom space, equipment, materials, and supplies are kept safe, clean, and organized.
- Assist in the preparation of accurate and timely reports, record-keeping, and documentation required for the classroom.
- Adhere strictly to health and safety policies and procedures.
- Participate in all mandatory staff meetings, workshops, training sessions, committee meetings, and family engagement activities.
- Foster positive relationships with families through regular communication, including phone calls, conferences, and volunteer opportunities.
- Act as a designated mandated reporter.
- Ensure accurate attendance records are maintained and be aware of the whereabouts of all children in care.
- Work under the direct supervision of a Group Leader or higher at all times.
- Provide active supervision of children.
- Complete mandated reporter training as required.
- Engage with all children and families by understanding and addressing their needs, both within and outside the scope of the role.
- Attend and contribute to team meetings as requested, ensuring effective communication with clients and staff across different areas.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding program, employee, and agency information in accordance with federal and state laws and funding requirements.
- Ensure compliance with program, department, agency, and funder requirements, as well as Suburban/SMOC policies and procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
- Previous experience working with school-age children is preferred.
- Demonstrates patience and the ability to follow directions.
- Serves as a positive role model for younger children.
REPORTING STRUCTURE
- This position reports directly to Group Leaders and School Age Program Directors.
- There are no direct reports for this position.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Ability to lift children weighing up to 30 lbs.
- Must provide proof of a physical examination within the last year confirming good health and compliance with all EEC requirements.
- Physically capable of performing CPR, which includes getting on the floor, providing effective breaths, and administering chest compressions.
- COVID-19 vaccination is strongly encouraged.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position involves working both indoors and outdoors, regardless of weather conditions. The Assistant Group Leader will have direct or incidental contact with clients served by SMOC in various programs funded or administered through the Executive Office of Health and Human Services or the Department of Early Education & Care. A successful background check is required.
