Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Leachate and Landfill Gas Technician to join our team at the City of Fargo. As a key member of our waste management team, you will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of our landfill leachate collection system and landfill gas collection and control system.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate and maintain equipment related to leachate collection and landfill gas collection in a timely and cost-effective manner to achieve optimum performance standards.
  • Perform daily preventative maintenance, observe and listen to equipment to determine malfunctions or parts in need of replacement, and operate equipment to ensure proper functioning.
  • Perform minor repairs, such as cleaning out clogged pumps, replacing parts, or coordinating with supervisors to procure subcontractor services, and maintain records regarding work activities, equipment operation, and compliance with department rules and state and federal regulations.
  • Collect qualitative landfill gas samples from various sources on a predetermined basis and perform daily preventative maintenance to ensure proper functioning.
  • Communicate courteously and professionally with coworkers, supervisors, and the general public to exchange information and receive work direction.
  • Perform all job duties in compliance with safety guidelines and with an ongoing awareness of safety practices, including wearing proper protective equipment and utilizing proper body mechanics and ergonomics.
Requirements
  • A high school diploma and four or more years of previous experience in the operation and maintenance of pumps, motors, and related machinery, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A valid Class B commercial driver's license with air brake endorsement and North Dakota Operator's Certificate.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations concerning leachate and landfill gas collection systems.
  • Knowledge of the proper operation and maintenance of equipment used in the leachate and landfill gas collection process, including pumps and motors.
  • Knowledge of confined space entry and hazardous materials handling as related to leachate and landfill gas collection.
  • Knowledge of procedures for sampling and sample testing relative to leachate or landfill gas.
  • Skill in performing mechanical maintenance and repair to equipment.
  • Skill in reading and writing English sufficient to read and write logs and records.
  • Skill in observation and interpretation of changes in system control to determine necessary adjustments.
  • Skill in operation of leachate collection systems and landfill gas collection equipment and in the performance of all operating systems.
  • Skill in the proper and safe operation, servicing, and maintenance of any leachate or landfill gas collection equipment.
  • Basic level skill in computer use.
  • Skill in performing basic math computation.
  • Skill in communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisors, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Working Conditions

The majority of work is performed in a field environment involving working inside and outside of vehicles. Seasonal conditions can include excessive heat or cold. Conditions can include working in wet, muddy, slippery, or dusty and windy conditions. At these times, there may be intermittent exposure to very disagreeable working conditions. Some assignments involve exposure to odors, such as from solid waste, leachate, or landfill gas. There is often exposure to traffic and moving equipment. There is considerable attention to detail when handling equipment in tight quarters or around people.
