Position Overview:

  • The Cardiac Rhythm Monitoring Specialist (CRMS) is tasked with the ongoing observation of cardiac rhythms within the Central Monitoring Room. The CRMS interprets cardiac rhythms, distinguishing between normal and abnormal patterns, and communicates this vital information accurately and promptly to nursing staff.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Cardiac Monitoring and Rhythm Interpretation:
  • Enroll patients into the monitoring system and input all relevant patient data.
  • Ensure that patients are connected to the correct telemetry transmitter upon admission and during each shift, confirming this with the Surveillance Admission Monitor (SAM) nurse or designated RN.
  • Complete all necessary documentation and file it appropriately.
  • Gather report information, including cardiac rhythm history, code status, and any factors affecting cardiac rhythms, as well as relevant medications or therapies.
  • Analyze and document each patient's rhythm strips upon admission and at least every 8 hours thereafter.
  • Alert the patient's nurse and SAM nurse regarding any rhythm changes.
  • Exhibit precision in cardiac rhythm analysis.
  • Seek assistance from the SAM RN for rhythm interpretation when necessary.
  • Identify conditions that may mimic dysrhythmias and impact the clarity of rhythm analysis, such as artifacts or loose electrodes.
  • Maintain constant vigilance, dedicating full attention to the cardiac monitors.
  • Recognize situations requiring Rapid Response or Code Blue, and take appropriate actions.
  • Disinfect telemetry transmitters after each patient use.
  • Facilitate appropriate transfers and discharges from the monitoring system.
  • Keep monitoring equipment clean and dust-free.
  • Manage the Telemetry Monitoring System, troubleshooting effectively within the scope of the role.
  • Notify the Biomedical Department, Management, SAM RN, and other relevant personnel of any equipment malfunctions or repair needs in a timely manner.
  • Documentation:
  • Record lead, regularity, atrial rate, P wave integrity, PRI & QRS interval measurements, final cardiac rhythm interpretation, and necessary actions or responses.
  • Ensure documentation is completed for every patient at least every 8 hours.
  • Document rhythm strip analysis immediately before, during, and after any code situations.
  • Test communication devices daily and document response times.
  • Communication:
  • Inform nursing staff of any benign rhythm changes upon discovery.
  • Immediately notify nursing staff of any lethal or malignant rhythms.
  • Maintain regular communication with the SAM RN.
  • Alert nursing assistants or other personnel regarding any lead disconnections.
  • Communicate with patient care areas about telemetry transmission quality, patient activities, and transfers to ensure continuous monitoring of cardiac rhythms.
  • Share patient and unit information with the RN and interdisciplinary care team promptly.
  • Seek assistance from RN or SAM RN as needed.
  • Receive reports and clarify information as necessary.
  • Never leave the Monitoring Room unattended; arrange breaks with SAM RN or qualified personnel to ensure adequate coverage.
  • Accept assignments and function as a collaborative team member.
  • Introduce oneself to patients and explain procedures clearly to patients and their families.
  • Professional Development:
  • Enhance personal knowledge through practice, observation, and participation in continuing education programs when available. Complete annual competency assessments for cardiac rhythm interpretation.
  • Promote best practices by demonstrating a commitment to quality patient care.
  • Encourage innovation and creativity within the practice environment.
  • Serve as a mentor and preceptor for new team members.
  • Welcome constructive feedback regarding performance and demonstrate evidence of improvement.
  • Exhibit effective verbal and written communication skills suitable for healthcare settings.
  • Adhere to the Department of Nursing Dress Code.
  • Departmental and Organizational Support:
  • Participate in assigned committee meetings and contribute meaningfully.
  • Support organizational values and strategies.
  • Engage with programs such as Magnet, iCare Values, and Nursing Councils, performing duties in alignment with these standards.
  • Contribute to data collection for unit and hospital-based studies.
  • Maintain attendance and punctuality standards in accordance with hospital policies.
  • Equipment Maintenance:
  • Ensure equipment is in proper working order, using it appropriately and following departmental policies for maintenance and cleaning.
  • Perform assigned duties to keep the unit prepared for surveys and uphold quality initiatives.
  • Maintain a well-stocked work area and store equipment in designated locations.
  • Support patient care initiatives by fostering a quiet environment and delivering excellent customer service.
  • Attend staff meetings regularly.
  • Keep patient care areas and work environments organized and tidy.
Qualifications:
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support certification (Required)
Education and Experience:
  • High School Diploma or GED (Required)
  • 1+ years of experience, completion of CCH Dysrhythmia Course, and MST Orientation; must complete annual competency assessment for cardiac rhythm interpretation.
