POSITION SUMMARY

The Immigration Law Specialist plays a crucial role in managing cases and providing legal representation for immigrants navigating their immigration processes before the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and/or the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR).

Catholic Charities is a faith-based organization established by the Catholic Diocese of Austin, dedicated to delivering essential social services to individuals in need. The mission of Catholic Charities is to assist the Bishop of Austin in fulfilling Christ's mission throughout Central Texas. Employees in this role contribute to the ministry of the Catholic Church in specific capacities, thereby engaging in the Church's mission.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Embrace and promote the philosophy of Catholic ministry and the mission of the Diocese of Austin in both professional and personal conduct.
  • Serve as a model of Gospel values by embodying the teachings of the Catholic Church.
  • Engage in continuous professional development through participation in religious events, training sessions, and reflective practices as directed.
  • Conduct comprehensive legal consultations on immigration matters to assess eligibility for benefits and provide informed legal guidance to clients, evaluating potential risks and advantages of various options.
  • Represent clients in immigration proceedings before USCIS, EOIR, and, when necessary, in State court to support their immigration cases.
  • Act as a resource by fostering relationships with other attorneys, non-profit organizations, and professionals for additional legal assistance or expertise.
  • Analyze case facts, devise strategies, and produce detailed legal documents, including briefs and affidavits, for various immigration issues such as family-based immigration, adjustment of status, citizenship, VAWA petitions, and U visa applications.
  • Manage a high volume of cases efficiently while overseeing special projects.
  • Provide legal guidance to staff, delegate tasks, and perform peer reviews of all submitted cases.
  • Participate in immigration workshops and training sessions as an attendee or presenter.
  • Contribute actively as a member of the Catholic Charities team.
  • Maintain a work schedule that optimizes availability for staff and clients.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • In-depth knowledge of immigration laws and procedures.
  • Understanding of State law, particularly regarding juvenile and family court matters involving minors.
  • Expertise in immigration program administration, including financial oversight, compliance with grants, and staff management.
  • Strong analytical skills, strategic thinking, and cultural sensitivity.
  • Ability to develop and manage program budgets effectively.
  • Proficient in drafting grants and contracts.
  • Capable of preparing and presenting information clearly to diverse audiences, including managers, clients, and the public.
  • Fluent in English and Spanish, with strong communication skills in both languages.
  • Adept at executing short- and long-term projects efficiently.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Experience working with diverse populations, including low-income and disadvantaged individuals.
  • Comfortable operating within a faith-based environment.
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality at all times.
  • Proficient in various software applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions accurately.
  • Skilled in fostering positive relationships within the community, including parishes, clergy, and civic leaders.
  • Dedicated to providing exceptional customer service to both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Willingness to travel as needed throughout the service region.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Education:

  • Doctorate of Jurisprudence and a current license to practice immigration law in the United States.

Language Proficiency:

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish (proficient in speaking, writing, and reading).

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Doctorate of Jurisprudence.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Compliance with the Diocese of Austin Ethics and Integrity in Ministry (EIM) policies is required throughout employment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Regular office hours are Monday to Friday, with potential evening and weekend work required.
