We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Veteran Service Officer to join our team at the City and County of Denver. As a key member of our team, you will play a critical role in providing exceptional support and services to our veteran community.

Job Summary

The Veteran Service Officer will be responsible for filing Veteran Administration claims on behalf of veterans and their families, advising on state and federal entitlements, and providing trauma-informed, wrap-around, and empathetic customer service. This role will also involve maintaining liaison with public and private agencies, making personal appearances, and performing other duties as assigned.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare claims on behalf of veterans
  • Assist County VSO in the preparation and submission of claims
  • Interview and consult with prospective clients about veteran benefits
  • Complete appropriate claim forms in accordance with state and federal regulations
  • Evaluate evidence and request evidence that supports claims or strengthens appeals by the veteran
  • Advocate on behalf of the veteran by acting as a bridge between the veteran and the VA
  • Use judgment and resources in interpreting evidence and correspondence provided by the veteran to affect a favorable outcome for the veteran
  • Acknowledge and respond to electronic Power of Attorney requests from federal Veteran Affairs
  • Complete appropriate Veteran Affairs forms for supplemental claims and higher-level reviews
  • Provide outreach to veterans and the community to inform and advocate for veterans
  • Makes referrals to other public and private social services and community agencies and resources to meet individual and family needs, assists individual and their families in understanding and utilizing these resources
About You

We are looking for a highly motivated and compassionate individual with a strong background in case management, resource referral, and navigating systems. The ideal candidate will have experience working with veterans and their families, as well as strong relationship-building and networking skills. They will also possess excellent communication skills, both internal and external, and be able to work independently in diverse environments.

Required Minimum Qualifications
  • Education requirement: Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET, or TASC Certificate
  • Experience requirement: Five (5) years of technical or administrative experience performing standard research and evaluation, case management, and/or implementing work processes
  • Education/Experience Equivalency: One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of education may be substituted for each required year of experience
