Job Summary

The City of Wenatchee, WA is seeking a highly skilled Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator to join our team. As a key member of our Public Works department, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of our wastewater treatment facilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate and maintain treatment and sludge processing equipment to control flow and processing of wastewater, sludge, and effluent.
  • Perform process control, laboratory functions, and routine maintenance of the collection system to ensure process balance.
  • Inspect, adjust, operate, and maintain various equipment, including aerated chambers, mechanical bar screens, air blowers, pumps, clarifiers, and more.
  • Operate and maintain sewage pump stations, clean wet wells, basins, tanks, and clarifiers.
  • Obtain wastewater samples, perform routine laboratory analysis, and calculate unit and plant efficiencies to ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Collaborate with plant, environmental, and engineering staff to ensure effective operation and maintenance of the treatment plant.
  • Document and maintain complete and concise operations logs and records, prepare process control reports, and present findings.
  • Monitor and maintain a safe and organized work environment, perform general clean-up tasks, and adhere to established safety procedures.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Three years of operational experience in a wastewater treatment plant.
  • Current WA Department of Ecology Group II Wastewater Operator Certificate.
  • Ability to obtain a WA CDL Class B Driver License (tanker endorsement/air brake restriction removed) within six months of hire and maintain throughout employment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of safety and security hazards, precautions, standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Understanding of equipment, materials, testing, and operating procedures of a modern wastewater treatment plant.
  • Principles and procedures of process control methods and wastewater testing and treating chemicals.
  • Federal, state, and local environmental regulations applicable to water quality standards associated with effective operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment facility.
  • Mathematics, including basic algebra.
  • Computer operation and software, including Microsoft Office products.
Working Conditions

Work is performed in a plant and outdoor setting, in dirty environments, in all weather conditions. Exposed to raw sewage and toxic or unpleasant odors. May be exposed to hazards from obstacles, machinery, and chemicals associated with the treatment plant, collection system, and bio-solids processing sites.

  • Vacation leave will be earned at a rate of 10 hours per month and will be available for use upon successful completion of the initial review period.
  • Sick leave will be earned at a rate of 8 hours per month.
  • Annual Paid Holidays (1st year prorate): Eleven 8-hour designated holidays (11th holiday for AFSCME positions under MOU through one 8-hour floating holiday).

  • Optional participation in a Section 457 Deferred Comp Plan with a City match up to 2% of base pay.
