Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate and maintain treatment and sludge processing equipment in a safe and efficient manner to control flow and processing of wastewater, sludge, and effluent.
  • Perform process control, laboratory functions, and routine maintenance of the collection system to ensure process balance.
  • Inspect, adjust, operate, and maintain various equipment, including aerated chambers, mechanical bar screens, air blowers, pumps, clarifiers, gravity belt thickener, belt filter press, anaerobic digesters, gas mixing system, boiler, heat exchanger, aeration basins, electrical motors, hypochlorite system, and UV disinfection equipment.
  • Operate and maintain sewage pump stations, clean wet wells, basins, tanks, and clarifiers.
  • Obtain wastewater samples, perform routine laboratory analysis, and calculations to determine unit and plant efficiencies, ensuring compliance with the National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit testing requirements.
  • Work closely with plant, environmental, and engineering staff to ensure effective operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment plant.
  • Document and maintain complete and concise operations logs and records, prepare process control reports, and present findings.
  • Monitor and maintain a safe and organized work environment, performing general clean-up tasks throughout the shift.
  • Adhere to established safety procedures, utilize safety equipment as required, and report safety issues or concerns to management in a timely manner.
  • Perform work in compliance with instructions, policies, procedures, and legal requirements.
  • Maintain current procedures and tasks to explain position responsibilities, create, update, and implement process improvement procedures, tasks, workflows, and systems.

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Three years of operational experience in a wastewater treatment plant.
  • Current WA Department of Ecology Group II Wastewater Operator Certificate.
  • Must obtain a WA CDL Class B Driver License (tanker endorsement/air brake restriction removed) within six months of hire and maintain throughout employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of the field of assignment sufficient to perform thoroughly and accurately the full scope of responsibility.
  • Safety and security hazards, precautions, standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Equipment, materials, testing, and operating procedures of a modern wastewater treatment plant.
  • Principles and procedures of process control methods and wastewater testing and treating chemicals.
  • Federal, state, and local environmental regulations applicable to water quality standards associated with effective operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment facility.
  • Mathematics, including basic algebra.
  • Computer operation and software, including Microsoft Office products.

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed in a plant and outdoor setting, in dirty environments, in all weather conditions.
  • Exposed to raw sewage and toxic or unpleasant odors.
  • May be exposed to hazards from obstacles, machinery, and chemicals associated with the treatment plant, collection system, and bio-solids processing sites.
  • Occasional work is performed in high, precarious places.
  • Noise levels range from quiet to very loud, requiring ear protection.
