POSITION OVERVIEW

The role of the Physician Assistant involves providing essential support to the surgical team during thoracic and cardiovascular operations. Responsibilities include tasks such as tissue retraction, the insertion of intravenous lines, and the closure of surgical wounds. Additionally, the Physician Assistant will perform preoperative and postoperative duties to enhance patient care.

The ideal candidate will exhibit a high level of medical expertise, clinical proficiency, sound judgment, and professionalism in communication and documentation. Ongoing professional development and competency validation are also expected.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in various cardiac surgical procedures, including emergency interventions, showcasing adaptability and skill.
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgical team regarding specific procedure requirements.
  • Under physician supervision, prepare the patient according to surgical guidelines.
  • Support hemostasis through direct pressure and the application of surgical instruments as directed by the surgeon.
  • Retract tissues as instructed by the surgical team.
  • Utilize electrocautery and other instruments for tissue management.
  • Assist in the placement of drains and closure of all wound layers as per the surgeon's directives.
  • Procure and prepare veins or arteries for use in surgical procedures.
  • Monitor patient vital signs and responses throughout surgical interventions.
  • Assist in the closure of surgical sites and the application of dressings.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of aseptic techniques relevant to surgical procedures.
  • Maintain compliance with all company policies and HIPAA regulations.
  • Engage in comprehensive patient care within a collaborative healthcare team.
  • Coordinate educational needs for patients and their families.
  • Facilitate discharge planning and communicate effectively with surgeons and referring providers.
  • Submit accurate billing for services rendered.
  • Act as a resource for nursing staff and other healthcare team members.
  • Participate in educational initiatives and quality improvement projects.
  • Engage in research activities related to clinical specialties.
  • Maintain current certifications and hospital privileges.
Qualifications

Experience: Previous experience in cardiothoracic surgery is preferred.

Licensure: Must possess a valid Physician Assistant license.

Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are required.
