POSITION OVERVIEW

UofL Physicians is in search of an advanced practice clinician to collaborate with the CVICU (Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit) Intensivists and the adult cardiothoracic surgical teams at our facility. The selected APC will deliver comprehensive care to patients undergoing cardiothoracic procedures in both step-down and intensive care units. This role involves a flexible schedule that includes both day and night shifts, with specific requirements to be discussed during the interview process.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The APC will be responsible for daily rounds and surgical progress documentation for all cardiothoracic patients. Responsibilities include:

  • Management of inpatient and outpatient care for cardiothoracic patients, including evaluation, assessment, and the development and implementation of treatment plans.
  • Supervision and mentorship of registered nurses in the care of cardiothoracic patients.
  • Collaboration with physicians and the multidisciplinary healthcare team to participate in cardiovascular service line committees and educate staff on protocols.
  • Patient education and disease management.

The patient population includes, but is not limited to, individuals with:

  • Acute decompensated heart failure
  • Post-operative complications from complex cardiac surgeries
  • Acute myocardial infarction
  • Complicated endocarditis
  • Aortic dissections
  • Temporary ventricular assist devices and LVADs

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The APC will perform comprehensive histories and physical examinations, consults, and daily surgical progress notes for adult cardiothoracic patients in both the CVICU and step-down units. Key functions include:

  • Assessment and management of chest tubes, epicardial wires, and central venous lines.
  • Management of anti-arrhythmic medications, anticoagulation, and titration of inotropic medications.
  • Outpatient post-operative follow-up care.
  • Collaboration with a multidisciplinary critical care team to ensure patient-focused care.
  • Documentation and reporting of care in an accurate and timely manner.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Certification:

  • APRN: Graduate of an accredited program with a Master of Science in Nursing. Board Certification is required, with a preference for Acute Care certification.
  • PA: Graduate of an accredited physician assistant program and certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.

Licensure:

  • APRN and RN in the state of Kentucky
  • Physician Assistant in the state of Kentucky
  • ACLS/BLS certification is required and can be obtained upon employment.
  • DEA certification to be obtained upon employment.
