Job Summary

The primary objective of this role is to engage in protective service activities and uphold legal statutes for the community. Responsibilities encompass enforcing regulations, probing into criminal incidents, safeguarding public welfare, maintaining documentation, providing testimony in legal proceedings, and drafting reports.

Key Responsibilities
  • Successfully complete the training program at the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy (SCCJA).
  • Participate in a comprehensive field training initiative, which includes:
    • Monitoring traffic and community safety through patrols, utilizing specialized police tools, and ensuring a visible law enforcement presence.
    • Conducting interviews with victims and witnesses to gather pertinent information regarding incidents.
    • Investigating offenses, collecting evidence, and executing searches.
    • Responding to dispatch calls, addressing complaints, serving legal documents, and maintaining arrest records.
    • Engaging in drug enforcement activities and conducting surveillance operations.
    • Executing arrests, providing court testimony, and preparing incident reports.
    • Conducting traffic enforcement, investigating accidents, issuing citations, directing traffic, and offering medical assistance when necessary.
    • Providing escorts, managing traffic flow, and performing security checks for various properties.
    • Participating in ongoing training and specialized programs.
    • Addressing domestic disputes and collaborating with other law enforcement agencies as required.
    • Reporting hazardous conditions related to public safety.
  • May undertake additional responsibilities such as school resource officer or investigative duties, working assigned shifts.
  • Perform other related tasks as needed.
Qualifications

Education and Experience:

A high school diploma or equivalent is required; while prior law enforcement experience is preferred, it is not mandatory.

Licenses or Certifications:
  • Possession of a valid South Carolina driver's license.
  • Certification from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Training Academy (SCCJA).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Familiarity with law enforcement methods and procedures.
  • Understanding of police department regulations.
  • Knowledge of local geography and significant landmarks.
  • Proficiency in firearm usage.
  • Ability to operate police vehicles effectively.
  • Capability to build and maintain positive relationships with colleagues and the public.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Skill in preparing clear and concise reports.
  • Professional demeanor when interacting with the public.
  • Analytical skills to assess situations effectively.
  • Capacity to respond swiftly and reasonably in hazardous situations.
Physical Demands & Work Environment

This position involves light physical activity. The employee may frequently need to exert up to 10 pounds of force and occasionally up to 20 pounds. Duties are performed in various outdoor conditions, which may include exposure to environmental hazards. The role requires flexibility in work hours and the ability to manage stressful situations.
