Data Systems Specialist

We're MotherDuck, a company dedicated to transforming the way people interact with and understand their data. Our team is passionate about building an even richer, more scalable, and collaborative experience atop the DuckDB open-source project. As a Backend Infrastructure Engineer, you'll be part of our Platforms team, responsible for designing, building, and optimizing the runtime that manages our flock of little DuckDBs hard at work running customer queries. Challenges include dynamic resource allocation, custom storage formats, state management, and observability.
We're looking for someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment, has a passion for distributed systems, and can partner with internal engineering teams, cross-functional partners, and customers to weave together a coherent system. Key Responsibilities
- Design and build server-side infrastructure for MotherDuck.
- Write clean, well-documented, and maintainable code that follows established coding standards and best practices.
- Monitor and troubleshoot production issues, and work to resolve them in a timely manner.
- Embrace feedback, empower your teammates, and invest in the team's success.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
- 5+ years of experience in software development, with a focus on backend development and DevOps.
- Experience with C++ programming or other systems programming languages.
- Experience with infrastructure management, deployment automation, and scaling.
- Strong understanding of distributed systems and microservices architecture.
- Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
- Experience with SQL databases, such as PostgreSQL and DuckDB.
- Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
- Self-directed, can get at the core of a problem independently but solve it as a team.
