Position Overview

The McDonald Observatory is in search of a skilled Mechanical Engineer to become part of their team at the Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET). This role focuses on the development of innovative research tools for astronomy, contributing to significant advancements in the discipline. The engineer will be instrumental in the functionality, upkeep, and design of mechanical systems at the Observatory.

Core Responsibilities
  • Engineering Tasks: Design, assess, and resolve issues related to mechanical systems for the telescope.
  • Operations Leadership: Supervise a team of technicians to ensure optimal telescope performance.
  • Project Coordination: Organize maintenance timelines and system enhancements.
  • Team Collaboration: Work with both internal and external groups to facilitate seamless operations.
  • Issue Resolution: Tackle challenges swiftly and implement effective solutions.
  • Meeting Engagement: Participate in planning and review discussions to enhance operational efficiency.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • 6+ years of experience in mechanical, optical, and electronic assemblies.
  • Proficiency in CAD software and project management methodologies.
  • Excellent communication and organizational abilities.
  • Capability to thrive in a dynamic environment and manage urgent situations.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree with 6 years of relevant experience or Bachelor's Degree with 8 years of experience.
  • Specialization in opto-mechanical design and astronomical instruments.
  • Experience with vacuum and cryogenic systems.
  • Training and/or experience in project management.
Additional Information

This position requires responsiveness to telescope-related issues beyond standard hours and may necessitate residing within the Observatory's community. A Class C driver's license is required, along with the ability to work at heights and in diverse environmental conditions. The starting salary for this role is $88,000, contingent on experience.
