Position Overview

The Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant will ensure seamless care for surgical patients and their families, maintaining continuity from initial hospital admission through the outpatient journey. This role is essential within the surgical team, providing education and serving as a vital link among healthcare providers throughout the care continuum.

Chief of Pediatric Surgery Service

Director of Advanced Practice Providers

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Function as a crucial member of the surgical team, managing patients from inpatient care (including ICU and recovery wards) to outpatient environments. Responsibilities include conducting comprehensive history and physical examinations, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, prescribing medications, developing and overseeing patient treatment plans, making referrals to specialists, and implementing appropriate treatment strategies.
  2. Perform minor surgical procedures, which may include but are not limited to: peripheral IV access, central venous access, PICC line placement, laceration repairs, incision/drainage/washout/debridement of wounds, tube thoracostomy, tracheostomy changes, arterial catheter placements, removal of drains/sutures/staples, and assisting in surgical operations as per institutional protocols.
  3. Collaborate with educational staff and clinical nurse specialists to enhance nursing education within patient care units, and serve as a mentor for medical and NP students.
  4. Uphold a standard of respect and dignity for every individual.
  5. Engage in research initiatives and projects.
  6. Complete training in HIPAA compliance and adhere to all relevant state and federal privacy regulations.
  7. Set annual professional development objectives in partnership with surgical service physicians.
  8. Create health education resources for patients and their families.
  9. Participate in continuing education opportunities to fulfill licensure requirements.
  10. Maintain ACLS certification.
  11. Contribute to multidisciplinary meetings focused on surgical care.

Qualifications:

  1. Active Rhode Island licensure as a Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant.
  2. Current DEA registration.
  3. Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  4. COVID vaccination is a requirement for employment.
