Job Summary

The University of Central Florida is seeking a highly skilled Laboratory Safety Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our Environmental Health and Safety department, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safe and environmentally sound management of chemical, biological, and radioactive materials, wastes, and processes in campus laboratories and service areas.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct compliance inspections related to laboratory safety and hazardous material storage and use, preparing inspection reports and monitoring completion dates of corrective action plans.
  • Maintain database information relating to laboratory safety and environmental management program areas.
  • Assist with review and input of chemical, biological, and radioactive inventories stored in campus laboratories or chemical storage areas.
  • Monitor classification, collection, transportation, storage, and documentation of chemical, biological, and radioactive waste prior to off-site shipment, maintaining waste storage facility and spill response equipment.
  • Provide safety training and guidance to the university community.
  • Perform surveying/sampling activities for potentially contaminated areas, assisting in response to, investigation, and follow-up on laboratory and environmental incidents, accidents, and spills.
  • Assist with the preparation of applications, record-keeping, reporting, and compliance testing for environmental permits, registrations, and notifications.
  • Assist in shipping, receiving, and delivery of hazardous materials/dangerous goods for the laboratory community.
  • Update applicable internal documents.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent and 2+ years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience pursuant to Fla. Stat.
  • OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification.
  • Current DOT hazardous materials training.
