About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Specialist to join our team at Tesla. As a key member of our HV Battery Design Engineering Team, you will be responsible for continuously improving our vehicle batteries currently in production.

Key Responsibilities:
  • You will be responsible for becoming the primary design point of contact for all batteries found in all Tesla vehicles (Models S3XY) across multiple cell types.
  • You will need to fully understand the battery design and the manufacturing systems that build it (factory process and equipment).
  • You will launch new battery variants based on existing architectures (higher/lower energy packs).
  • You will collaborate with Manufacturing, Process, and Quality to cut-over product improvements.
  • You will work with field quality and reliability to translate field failures into actionable part design changes, driving warranty improvements.
  • You will participate in battery teardowns for field and factory failures.
  • You will participate in design reviews and change control process.
  • You will own product improvements (cost, complexity reductions) and refine product specifications.
  • You will visit suppliers for part qualifications, design change reviews, line audits, etc.
Requirements:
  • You must have a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • You must be able to travel up to 25% of the year to different Tesla factories & offices as well as suppliers.
  • Experience is a plus but not mandatory; preferably 2-5 years in battery or high-volume manufacturing environments.
  • You must have strong Engineering fundamentals in heat transfer, electrical, mechanics, and basic electronics.
  • You must have proficiency in CAD modeling. CATIA V5/V6 and 3DX experience is a plus.
  • You must have proficiency with statistics and data analysis. SPC/Black-Belt proficiency a plus but not mandatory.
  • You should have preferred experience with various manufacturing processes such as plastic injection molding, metal stamping, thermoforming, welding/brazing, plating, PCBA/FPC, and bonding.
  • You should have preferred experience in designing for high volume assembly, both manual and automated.
  • You must have a detail-oriented personality with solid documentation and reporting skills.
  • Experience with student Formula Vehicle, Solar Car, Formula Baja, etc. is a plus.
Compensation and Benefits:

The total compensation package for this position includes a competitive salary of $104,000 - $204,000 per year, cash and stock awards, and a comprehensive benefits package.
