We are seeking a highly skilled Accounting Specialist to join our team at WMU Homer Stryker, M.D. School of Medicine. As an Accounting Specialist, you will be responsible for providing financial support to our organization by processing invoices, managing accounts payable, and performing various accounting functions.
Key Responsibilities- Process invoices and manage accounts payable, ensuring timely and accurate payment of approved expenditures.
- Review and verify vendor invoices for compliance with established policies and procedures.
- Investigate discrepancies and communicate effectively with vendors and other stakeholders.
- Assign and review accounts numbers for all items processed through the accounts payable system.
- Process employee reimbursements, verifying compliance with established policies and determining reasonableness and customariness of travel costs.
- Review and process travel requests, ensuring proper supporting documentation is provided.
- Provide coverage for the receiving docks as needed and perform various ad hoc reports.
- Acquire knowledge of new technology and policy/procedure revisions.
- Perform physical inventories on fixed assets and storeroom items as needed.
- Associate's degree or equivalent in accounting, plus minimum two years accounting/bookkeeping experience in a general office environment.
- Advanced knowledge of personal computing systems and basic to advanced knowledge of accounting software packages, including Excel or other spreadsheet programs.
- Ability to operate automated standard office equipment, such as multi-line phone system, calculator, copier, fax machine, shredder, etc.
- Ability to type at least 50 wpm and use a numeric keypad with a speed of at least 12000 keystrokes per hour.
- Ability to effectively communicate with others verbally and in writing, meet assigned deadlines, and interpret, comprehend, and transmit complicated and detailed instructions accurately.
- Demonstrates the ability to recognize priorities in organization of work flow and perform duties independently with minimal need for direct supervision.
