Position Overview

The SBA Underwriter role involves the meticulous collection, evaluation, and interpretation of financial and credit data to determine the creditworthiness of the organization's commercial SBA clientele, particularly focusing on moderately complex credit relationships. This position plays a crucial role in assisting Business/Commercial Bankers in managing both new and existing loan portfolios, with a strong emphasis on enhancing credit quality while minimizing risk and ensuring compliance with SBA regulations.

*Candidates must possess a minimum of 2 years of SBA underwriting experience.*

Key Responsibilities

  1. Conduct thorough reviews and analyses of financial and credit documents, including financial statements, tax returns, and credit reports, to assess the creditworthiness of borrowers and guarantors. Identify the necessity for further investigation or additional information and liaise with relevant sources.
  2. Generate comprehensive financial and analytical reports for each entity evaluated, encompassing historical financial data, trends, detailed cash flow analysis, global cash flow analysis, and basic projections.
  3. Investigate relevant industry and market data pertinent to clients' business sectors.
  4. Draft written summaries of analyses for both new and existing loan relationships, particularly regarding cash flow sufficiency, collateral adequacy, and other repayment sources. Evaluate the overall strengths and weaknesses of credit relationships.
  5. Communicate significant analytical findings and insights to Business/Commercial Bankers, management, or credit officers.
  6. Assist in the ongoing monitoring of credit files, including periodic financial statements, borrowing base certificates, accounts receivable aging, and other items as stipulated by loan agreements. Ensure compliance with covenants and financial reporting obligations.
  7. Exercise independent judgment in client relationship credit analysis and take appropriate actions based on findings.
  8. Engage in departmental or company-wide initiatives. Identify and propose process enhancements.
  9. Ensure adherence to SBA SOP rules and requirements for SBA 7(A) and SBA 504 loan programs.
  10. Collaborate with CDC on 504 loans.
  11. Provide technical guidance and support to Business/Commercial Bankers and clients.
  12. Lead the review of work, training, and development of junior Portfolio Managers.
  13. Participate in joint client meetings with Commercial Bankers to gather additional business insights.
  14. Stay informed about industry trends, community developments, market conditions, SBA policies, and regulatory requirements, and understand their implications on the organization's lending criteria.
  15. Comply with all applicable federal and state laws and regulations, including, but not limited to, the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) and related anti-money laundering laws and Office of Foreign Asset Controls (OFAC).
  16. Perform duties in accordance with relevant industry laws and regulations as well as the policies and procedures established by the organization.
  17. Execute additional responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

  1. Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business, Economics, Finance, or a related field; alternatively, candidates with a high school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience will be considered.
  2. A minimum of 7 years of experience in credit analysis or portfolio management within a commercial lending environment is required, with SBA experience preferred.
  3. Demonstrated expertise in underwriting across various commercial lending sectors, including commercial real estate, commercial and industrial lending, and SBA lending.
  4. Proven ability to effectively analyze financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, cash flow statements, and tax returns.
  5. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite is essential.
  6. Strong business mathematics skills are required.
  7. Ability to think critically and communicate findings clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
  8. Capacity to manage multiple tasks, prioritize effectively, and meet deadlines.
  9. Ability to collaborate and find common ground to resolve issues while articulating personal viewpoints.
  10. Commitment to ongoing professional development and staying informed about industry trends, market conditions, SBA policies, and regulatory requirements.
  11. Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, and customer service skills to interact professionally with clients, colleagues, senior management, auditors, and regulators.
  12. Willingness to travel to branch offices as necessary.
  13. Flexibility to work varied hours as needed.
  14. Must be bondable.

Compensation

The salary range for this position is between $90K and $120K, commensurate with experience. Additionally, this role includes commission opportunities and an annual bonus based on the bank's profitability for the fiscal year.
