Clinical Respiratory Therapy Intern

Compensation: $20.60/hour
Key Responsibilities:
- Under the supervision of a certified respiratory therapist, may carry out fundamental respiratory therapy tasks such as administering oxygen therapy, conducting pulse oximetry, providing aerosol therapy, and facilitating incentive spirometry.
- Organizes and maintains the inventory of respiratory therapy tools and materials in accordance with departmental standards.
- Retrieves equipment from various hospital locations, ensuring proper cleaning and reassembly following established protocols while adhering to standard safety precautions. Manages both disposable and reusable equipment in line with infection control guidelines.
- Completes annual competencies required by the hospital. Acquires knowledge of new equipment, supplies, procedures, and processes necessary for effective job performance.
- Assists with patient positioning and transportation tasks, which may involve lifting and pushing/pulling, while applying appropriate techniques.
- Must exhibit the knowledge and skills necessary to deliver care suitable for the age of the patients served. Demonstrates understanding of growth and development principles across the lifespan and possesses the ability to assess and interpret data relevant to each patient's needs, ensuring care aligns with departmental policies.
Licensure and Certification Requirements:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Healthcare Providers issued by the American Heart Association (AHA).
Educational Requirements:
- Currently enrolled in an accredited or recognized Respiratory Therapy program.
Experience Requirements:
- No prior experience necessary.
Essential Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Wisconsin externs: Must transition into a graduate respiratory therapist role immediately.
- Illinois externs: The extern status shall not exceed three years from the date of enrollment in an approved program.
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills, with the ability to work independently.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
- Must be able to walk, stand, squat, reach overhead, and sit throughout the workday.
- Repetitive hand use including simple grasping, pushing/pulling, and fine manipulation is required.
- Must be capable of lifting up to 50 lbs. from floor to waist, lifting up to 20 lbs. overhead, and carrying up to 40 lbs. a reasonable distance.
- Must be able to push/pull with a force of 30 lbs. and perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs. with assistance.
- Functional speech, vision, and hearing are essential.
- May encounter chemical and radiation hazards, as well as exposure to blood and body fluids; personal protective equipment must be utilized as necessary.
- Operates all necessary equipment to fulfill job responsibilities.
