POSITION SUMMARY:

The Aquatic Fitness Instructor is responsible for delivering exceptional service to our members by conducting safe and engaging classes that foster wellness principles. The instructor will also promote additional YMCA programs that contribute to our community events. A lively atmosphere should be cultivated, encouraging group participation.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Deliver outstanding member service daily by proactively assisting members, maintaining a positive demeanor, and being courteous.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of wellness principles and advocate for a balanced, healthy lifestyle through actions and communication. Follow and support YMCA guidelines regarding all Water Exercise classes.
  • Design new routines and regularly update music selections (if applicable).
  • Conduct safe and functionally challenging classes.
  • Adhere to the class format and style as outlined in the Water Exercise schedule.
  • Arrive punctually for all classes, typically 10 minutes early, to set up equipment, cue music, and greet members.
  • Maintain all certification requirements of the YMCA.
  • Ensure proper maintenance of equipment used in Water Exercise classes, returning all items to their designated area post-class and assisting in keeping the pool environment orderly.
  • Document class attendance as required by the Director.
  • Comply with all YMCA of Montclair policies, procedures, rules, regulations, and best practices, including emergency and safety protocols, while supporting the association's philanthropic initiatives.
  • This position is safety-sensitive and subject to random drug testing as scheduled.
  • Participate in mandatory staff meetings.
  • Address any issues or conflicts experienced by YMCA members in a professional manner, escalating to the Coordinator/Director as necessary.
  • Responsible for arranging substitute instructors as needed and reporting any schedule changes to the Aquatics Director.
  • Adhere to all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, best practices, and procedures, including emergency and safety protocols. Complete incident and accident reports as required.
  • Attend necessary Abuse Risk Management training and follow procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising members and participants.
  • Report any suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations, following mandated abuse reporting procedures.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned by the supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Certifications: Basic Life Support (CPR), AED, Oxygen Administration, & Basic First Aid certification.
  • Water Exercise Certification from an accredited organization.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to lift and pull equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, and to lift a small to average-sized child.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods.
  • Must be in good physical condition to effectively teach classes.
  • Ability to work in various environments (i.e., humidity, heat, cold, inclement weather).
  • Ability to maintain focus in a loud environment.
