POSITION SUMMARY:
The Montclair YMCA is a prominent nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing community well-being, and is recognized as the largest provider of swimming lessons nationwide, aimed at improving skills and safety in aquatic environments. This role entails providing direct leadership, guidance, and encouragement to participants in our aquatic programs.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conducts group and individual swimming lessons in alignment with YMCA standards, adhering to established lesson plans and performing swim stage assessments.
  • Maintains up-to-date swim instruction certifications.
  • Fosters genuine relationships with students and their families; facilitates connections among them and the YMCA, promoting parental involvement and identifying potential volunteers.
  • Communicates information regarding aquatic programs and schedules, referring students and families to additional offerings as necessary.
  • Keeps accurate records as required (progress trackers, reports, class rosters, etc.).
  • Participates in departmental meetings, in-service training, and mandatory YMCA gatherings.
  • Complies with all YMCA policies, regulations, best practices, and procedures, including emergency and safety protocols. Supports the organization's philanthropic initiatives.
  • Organizes and returns class equipment to designated storage areas, reporting any damaged items. Completes incident reports as needed.
  • Adheres to policies regarding boundaries with members, volunteers, staff, and participants.
  • Completes required Abuse Risk Management training and follows procedures for managing high-risk activities and supervising members and participants.
  • Reports any suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations, following mandated reporting procedures.
  • Trains and oversees class aides as assigned.
  • Responsible for securing substitute instructors and notifying the director of schedule changes in advance.
  • This position is classified as safety-sensitive and is subject to random drug testing.
  • Assists in various areas as assigned and completes all projects as directed by the supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Current YMCA Swim Instructor certification or Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of YMCA coursework.
  2. Current Basic Life Support (CPR), AED, Oxygen Administration, and Basic First Aid certification; must maintain annual certification in BLS/AED.
  3. Must demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
  4. Must possess CPR/AED and First Aid Certification or obtain certification within 90 days of employment.
  5. Minimum of 3 years of instructional experience with performance reviews that exceed expectations.
  6. Minimum age of 21 years.

PAY RATE: $18-$20 Hourly

WORK SCHEDULE:
Saturday mornings (8:00 AM - 2:00 PM)
Weeknights (3:00 PM - 8:00 PM)
