POSITION SUMMARY:

The Aquatic Fitness Instructor will deliver exceptional service to our members by conducting safe and engaging classes that encourage wellness principles. The instructor will also promote additional YMCA programs that support our special events. A lively atmosphere should be fostered, and group engagement should be prioritized.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Deliver outstanding member service daily by proactively assisting members, exhibiting a positive demeanor, and being courteous.
  • Possess knowledge of wellness principles and advocate for a balanced, healthy lifestyle through actions and communication. Adhere to and support YMCA guidelines regarding all Aquatic Fitness classes.
  • Design new routines and update music selections (if applicable) regularly.
  • Conduct safe and functionally stimulating classes.
  • Follow the class style and format as outlined in the Aquatic Fitness schedule.
  • Arrive punctually for all classes, typically 10 minutes early, to set up equipment, cue music, and greet members.
  • Maintain current certifications as required by the YMCA.
  • Properly care for equipment used in Aquatic Fitness classes, ensuring all equipment is returned to its designated area post-class and assisting in maintaining the pool environment.
  • Document class attendance as required by the Director.
  • Comply with all YMCA of Montclair policies, procedures, rules, regulations, and best practices, including emergency and safety protocols, while supporting the association's philanthropic initiatives.
  • This position is classified as safety-sensitive and is subject to required random drug testing.
  • Participate in mandatory staff meetings.
  • Address any issues or conflicts that YMCA members may encounter in a professional manner, contacting the Coordinator/Director if necessary.
  • Responsible for arranging substitute instructors as needed and reporting any schedule changes to the Aquatics Director.
  • Adhere to all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, best practices, and procedures, including emergency and safety protocols. Complete incident and accident reports as necessary.
  • Attend required Abuse Risk Management training and follow procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising members and participants.
  • Report any suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations, following mandated abuse reporting procedures.
  • Perform other job-related tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Certifications: Basic Life Support (CPR), AED, Oxygen Administration, & Basic First Aid certification.
  • Water Exercise Certification from an accredited organization.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to lift and move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, and to lift a small to average-sized child.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods.
  • Must be in good physical condition to instruct classes.
  • Must be able to work in various environments (i.e., humidity, heat, cold, inclement weather).
  • Must be able to focus in a noisy environment.
