  • To ensure long-term care services and supports are affordable and accessible for all New Yorkers needing additional assistance to live independently.
  • To enhance the quality of long-term care employment and create the necessary caregiving positions to meet the growing demand in our communities.
  • To mobilize our community to build the power required to transform our neighborhoods into interdependent, caring, and resilient environments.

Position Overview

The Syracuse Community Advocate will concentrate on expanding Caring Majority Rising's membership and fostering the leadership of home care professionals, individuals with disabilities, family caregivers, and older adults. This role involves leading outreach and community engagement efforts in Syracuse through a mix of paid and volunteer canvassing initiatives that both promote care candidates and engage voters with their personal care narratives.

The Advocate will be tasked with designing and implementing a membership initiative, collaborating with partner organizations to plan and execute actions and events that elevate the significance of home care as a critical issue for voters in upcoming elections.

The Syracuse Community Advocate will receive direct supervision from the Senior Lead Organizer, who will assist in developing this program alongside a comprehensive organizing strategy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Senior Lead Organizer and canvass director to create and execute an outreach strategy targeting voters concerned about home care in Syracuse, leveraging existing relationships and establishing new connections.
  • Dedicate at least 50% of work hours to field activities, conducting outreach and building relationships within the community to generate new contacts and members.
  • Regularly update and maintain records of new contacts, field interactions, and member engagement in the appropriate database.
  • Conduct follow-up communications with new contacts to foster engagement.
  • Facilitate orientations and ongoing campaign activities for new contacts and volunteers.
  • Organize events that highlight home care as a significant issue for voters, including at least two large canvassing days.
  • Work closely with the digital organizer to prepare individuals to share their care stories in a digital campaign.
  • Identify and support emerging leaders within organizational campaigns.
  • Establish and nurture partnerships with allied organizations.
  • Perform additional tasks related to outreach planning, social media, mass communications, and event logistics as needed.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in grassroots community, labor, or electoral organizing.
  • A highly motivated individual with a commitment to engaging diverse, low-income communities and developing the leadership of those affected by home care.
  • Strong relational skills with the ability to connect, engage, and inspire community members.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, capable of working with individuals from various backgrounds and cultures.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Experience in facilitating meetings.
  • Basic computer proficiency (e.g., Google Suite, Excel, PowerPoint, Zoom, database programs).
  • Willingness to work some evenings and/or weekends as part of the regular schedule.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a team and motivate others to take action.
  • Strong time and project management abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Possession of a valid driver's license and access to a vehicle.
  • Familiarity with the domestic worker sector, particularly home care.
  • Knowledge of labor, racial justice, and other progressive movements in New York.
  • Proficiency in technology for remote communication, meetings, webinars, and project management.
  • Experience with database management for organizing purposes.

Working Conditions

Compensation, Benefits, & Work Schedule

This is a short-term, exempt, full-time position (40 hours per week). The salary will be $1,431 - $1,555/week (based on annual salary of $74,438 - $80,838), depending on years of experience. Work schedules may include evening or weekend hours based on organizational needs.

Caring Majority Rising offers temporary employees the following benefits:

  • 401k plan, eligible to contribute effective from the first day of employment.
  • Paid Time Off.
  • Vacation: 1.5 hours earned for every 2 weeks worked, totaling 7 vacation days during the contract period.
  • Sick days: 1 day earned for every 2 weeks worked, totaling 9 sick days during the contract period.
