Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Laborer and Light/Medium Duty Equipment Operator to join our team at the Virginia Department of Transportation. As a key member of our maintenance crew, you will be responsible for performing a variety of tasks related to road maintenance, including responding to emergency situations, operating equipment, and performing manual labor.

Key Responsibilities
  • Respond to emergency roadway and severe weather events to prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous road conditions
  • Attend work zone training, prepare work zones, and perform traffic control
  • Demonstrate proper work site protection techniques, including identifying workplace safety hazards, wearing proper personal protection equipment, and maintaining current knowledge of safety rules and regulations
  • Participate as a working team member performing manual labor, including clearing drainage pipes, maintaining the Right of Way, cutting brush, pot-hole patching, and fulfilling general tasks required to complete road maintenance projects
  • Complete pre-trip equipment inspections and perform preventive maintenance
Requirements
  • Knowledge of safety policies, materials, and procedures
  • Knowledge of highway maintenance materials and methods
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor, including frequently lifting up to 50 lbs
  • Skill in the operation and maintenance of diverse hand and power tools
  • Ability to work in inclement weather and to respond to accidents, emergency/disaster response, etc. during/after normal work hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays
Preferred Qualifications
  • Valid CDL Learners
  • Experience in light to medium duty equipment operation comparable to that used in roadway and/or roadside maintenance/construction activities
  • Experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs
  • Experience in emergency operations, including snow removal and preparations, work zone set up and/or flagging, storm clean up, accident response and clean-up

If selected as a finalist, you will undergo an employment reference check, work history verification, DMV records check, fingerprint-based criminal history records check, and a full query drug and alcohol history in FMCSA Clearinghouse. This position also requires approved safety shoes, which will be reimbursed.

Please note that this is an hourly/wage position and is not entitled to state benefits package and is limited to no more than 1500 hours in a 12-month period.
