Job Summary

The Learning Support Specialist 2 (LSS2) plays a vital role in providing academic support to students, working closely with them to develop and apply effective learning and critical thinking skills. This position requires a strong command of subject matter, an understanding of effective learning strategies, and the ability to engage actively and creatively with students using a variety of methods and tutoring approaches.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide direct support to students in learning and understanding concepts, assignments, and material in the tutor's area(s) of expertise.
  • Help students develop and apply effective studying, time management, and critical thinking skills.
  • Meet with students by appointment and as drop-ins, depending on availability.
Tutoring Program and Operational Support
  • Maintain documentation of all tutoring sessions.
  • Proficiently use and implement the College's tutoring and record-keeping software.
  • Assist with training and mentoring of Peer Learning Success Leaders and new LSS2s. Work collaboratively with tutoring administration, staff, and tutors to develop strategies and materials for effective tutoring and learning skills support.
  • Contribute to the work of the tutoring program by participating in promotion and outreach events and assisting with daily operations of the Tutoring Center as needed.

Continuous Learning
  • Maintain a thorough knowledge of subject concepts and materials, as well as multiple instructional methodologies, to accommodate various student learning styles.
  • Attend training sessions and participate in professional development activities covering a variety of tutoring and academic skills-related topics.
Requirements
  • Related Certificate or Associate's Degree
  • Six (6) months of teaching, tutoring, supplemental instruction experience, or equivalent related learning support experience.
