The University of Tennessee Knoxville, Public Safety, Department of Environmental Health and Safety, is seeking qualified candidates for the role of Laboratory Safety Compliance Manager. This position is responsible for the comprehensive oversight of safety compliance committees related to research activities, which include: 1) the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) that supervises research involving recombinant/synthetic nucleic acids; 2) the High Hazard Chemical Committee (HHCC) that manages procedures involving particularly hazardous and highly regulated chemicals as per OSHA Laboratory Safety Standards; and 3) the Laboratory Safety Committee (LSC) that leads initiatives to enhance laboratory safety and foster a culture of safety within the research environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Committee Coordination:

  • Organize and schedule committee meetings, ensuring all logistics are managed effectively.
  • Maintain up-to-date committee rosters and associated documentation, filing with relevant oversight agencies as necessary.
  • Develop and uphold committee charters, bylaws, and standard operating procedures.
  • Document meeting minutes in compliance with mandated guidelines.
  • Establish a tracking system for committee action items to ensure timely closure.
  • Keep committee-related web content current and accessible.
  • Coordinate subcommittees or working groups as required.

Workflow Management & Documentation:

  • Oversee the web-based registration (protocol) submission system, ensuring proper routing and tracking of reviews.
  • Monitor compliance expiration deadlines to avert lapses.
  • Conduct congruence checks with other research compliance approvals.
  • Provide consultation and guidance to faculty and staff, including the development of instructional tools.
  • Enhance registration/protocol forms to better serve committee needs.
  • Compile and analyze compliance records, preparing reports as needed.

Committee Training & Development:

  • Assess training needs for committee members and coordinate training sessions with experts.
  • Assist in the creation or revision of compliance training materials for the research community.
  • Benchmark regulatory agency requirements and summarize findings for committee review.
  • Pursue professional certifications in compliance committee management as directed.

Laboratory Safety Program Support:

  • Support data entry and organization efforts.
  • Implement document version control methods.
  • Draft or update procedural documents related to committee functions.
  • Assist in organizing outreach events related to laboratory safety.
  • Maintain compliance-related schedules and timelines.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and two years of experience in administrative coordination, preferably in a scientific research setting.
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license.

Preferred:

  • Experience in biology, chemistry, or a related natural science.
  • Background in managing compliance programs.
  • Experience in a higher education or research environment.

Professional Skills:

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Technical proficiency in computer operations and data analysis.
  • Willingness to learn new data management systems.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
