Position Overview

The Timber Operations Supervisor role is essential for managing wood flow services, which include overseeing timber extraction, transportation, and production processes. Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct all aspects of fieldwork, administrative tasks, and reporting.
  • Collaborate closely with Field Service Providers.
  • Implement annual harvesting strategies to optimize client revenue.
  • Oversee logging contractors and harvesting operations on client properties.
  • Plan timber sales and conduct pre-harvest meetings to discuss landing sites, sale layouts, compliance with Best Management Practices (BMP), road construction, and stream crossings.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with markets and product specifications for harvested materials.
  • Understand and comply with Local, State, and Federal regulations related to timber harvesting.
  • Familiarity with markets for all products sourced from client lands, including sawmills, pulp mills, and higher-value markets.
  • Exhibit strong negotiation skills to secure the best returns for landowners at mill locations.
  • Identify and delineate streamside management zones (SMZs) in accordance with state BMPs.
  • Forecast weekly logging output for clients and mills receiving shipments from AFM-managed lands.
  • Demonstrate strong analytical skills and proficiency in software such as Excel and Word, as well as mapping tools.
  • Prepare reports, assist in budget planning, and draft timber harvesting and transportation contracts.
  • Conduct timber harvesting inspections and generate reports to ensure contract compliance.
  • Organize and audit timber sale settlements to reconcile with logging load documentation.
  • Monitor load sheets, load tags, and ensure proper separation of all harvested products.
  • Communicate effectively with loggers, mill foresters, clients, colleagues, and local government entities.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Forestry with a minimum of 7 years of procurement experience.
  • Registered Forester in at least one state or the ability to obtain registration within three years.
  • Experience in managing Timber Supply Agreements is advantageous.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Proven ability to supervise staff.
  • Strong computer and analytical capabilities.
  • Excellent organizational and scheduling skills.
  • Ability to quickly learn about local markets.
  • Capability to coordinate wood flow requirements with various Field Service Providers.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Maintain a positive and proactive attitude.
  • Ability to generate new business opportunities through client engagement.
  • Willingness to travel as needed.
