Physical tasks include navigating stairs, walking, bending, twisting, reaching, and the ability to carry up to 40 lbs unassisted, with exposure to noise, chemicals, and varying weather conditions.

Compensation: $32.58/hour

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate and oversee production, pumping, and distribution systems from a control center, utilizing data from the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system and Geographic Information System (GIS).
  • Maintain and monitor flows and pressures across all systems, making independent decisions to balance flows to basins and reservoirs to meet water storage requirements.
  • Monitor water levels in reservoirs and towers, adjusting pump operations as necessary.
  • Collect water samples and conduct basic chemical tests, using results to inform process adjustments.
  • Manage chemical feed equipment, adjusting feed rates and determining chemical dosage requirements based on varying conditions to uphold water quality.
  • Troubleshoot treatment issues related to pH, solids levels, mixing intensity, chemical dosage, and biological processes.
  • Forecast daily water consumption and production needs based on weather monitoring.
  • Operate and maintain a water treatment facility, including equipment upkeep.
  • Document plant performance data on log sheets or digital databases.

Qualifications:

  • Must achieve Level 5 on the City of Wichita Water Utility Competency Scale within three years of hire, including:
    • Knowledge of federal and state regulations regarding safe drinking water production and distribution.
    • Comprehensive understanding of specialized water treatment operations.
    • Familiarity with the functions and mechanics of pumps, chemical analyzers, and other equipment used in water treatment, along with the ability to perform basic preventive maintenance.
    • Capability to calculate flows and solution strengths.
    • Ability to gather data and make informed decisions based on online analyzer information.
    • Proficiency in monitoring and evaluating SCADA data.
    • Utilization of GIS data for informed decision-making.
    • Ability to interpret and analyze complex data.
    • Basic knowledge of biology and chemistry principles as they relate to water treatment.
    • Competence in using computers for information access, interpretation, and recording.
    • Ability to endure exposure to environmental nuisances, chemicals used in water treatment, and machinery noise (with earplugs).
  • Physical capability to walk varying distances multiple times per shift, climb stairs, and perform bending, twisting, pushing, pulling, and reaching as needed to assess equipment functionality.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds.
  • Ability to exert pressure of up to 40 pounds to operate valves and fire hydrants.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to read and understand technical manuals.
  • Skill in developing and maintaining effective working relationships with colleagues, employees from other departments, and representatives from external agencies.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Possession of a valid Kansas driver's license.
  • Availability for after-hours emergencies, including on-call duties.
  • Commitment to not posing a direct threat to the health or safety of others in the workplace.

Education and Certification:

  • High school diploma required.
  • Kansas Class IV Water Supply System Operator certification or equivalent certification from another state (large water utility/surface water treatment). The applicant must complete the reciprocal process within the first six months of employment.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship.

Employment offers are contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment physical, which includes drug screening and a criminal background check.
