This role operates within a structured schedule, providing essential laboratory services.
The Clinical Laboratory Technicians specializing in Phlebotomy are pivotal in delivering exemplary customer service and are responsible for conducting blood draws, processing samples, and assisting with various medical support tasks. They manage the storage and distribution of biological samples and engage in several administrative duties to ensure smooth laboratory operations.
These technicians are tasked with performing phlebotomy services for all patients within the research framework and beyond. They process and dispatch specimen samples for clinical studies and oversee the preservation of samples in cold storage. Additionally, they provide a range of administrative support to facilitate patient and specimen management, ensuring a clean, organized, and efficient work environment that enhances the overall experience for users and contributes to successful research outcomes.
This position is accountable to the Operations Manager and adheres to established organizational and departmental protocols.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Team and Customer Interaction Quality: Ensure high-quality interactions within a team environment under the guidance of supervisory staff to maintain an efficient phlebotomy and specimen processing setting while delivering customer-focused services.
- Perform clerical and reception duties to support clinic operations. Manage patient flow by optimizing room usage. Conduct check-in and check-out processes as required. Verify appointment times for administrative needs. Answer phone calls, schedule, and confirm appointments, assisting with other administrative tasks as necessary, in alignment with professional etiquette.
- Prepare patients for their appointments, examinations, or treatments according to established protocols. Collect vital signs as needed and document visit reasons accurately using appropriate medical terminology.
- Embrace constructive feedback regarding performance and strive for improvement.
- Comply with policies related to breaks, dress code, and workplace conduct.
- Exhibit courtesy and respect towards patients, families, healthcare providers, and colleagues, contributing to a safe and productive work atmosphere.
- Phlebotomy and Patient Engagement: Prepare patients for their appointments and perform blood draws according to established protocols.
- Conduct phlebotomy on diverse patient demographics and collect samples following standard procedures.
- Measure vital signs and perform EKGs as necessary.
- Maintain competency in phlebotomy practices, including age-specific techniques and pediatric procedures as applicable.
- Assume responsibility for all assigned duties, performing tasks with professionalism and collaboration.
- Keep the work area organized and well-stocked.
- Report to work punctually and provide adequate notice for any absences or delays.
- Order Interpretation and Specimen Processing: Interpret orders and conduct routine specimen analysis using basic laboratory instruments.
- Follow research orders for specimen processing and review draft order sets for research teams.
- Ensure specimens are handled according to established priorities.
- Guarantee the quality and timeliness of specimen collection, centrifugation, and separation as per established protocols.
- Process various specimens in accordance with established guidelines.
- Input data into laboratory information systems accurately.
- Specimen Handling and Shipping: Adhere to labeling standards for specimen collection and storage.
- Label specimen containers accurately and complete necessary documentation in line with research protocols.
- Maintain accurate records of samples in cold storage and manage inventory effectively.
- Ensure timely distribution of specimens to designated laboratories as per research requirements.
- Review storage reports and respond to inquiries regarding sample management.
- Equipment Maintenance: Uphold laboratory equipment to performance standards.
- Maintain logs and schedules for equipment upkeep and coordinate repair activities as needed.
- Perform daily cleaning and decontamination of laboratory instruments.
- Participate in evaluating new equipment and provide recommendations based on functionality.
- Inventory and Supplies Management: Ensure adequate supply levels for laboratory operations.
- Review and update standard supply lists annually.
- Manage inventory levels, including ordering supplies and maintaining proper storage conditions.
- Support a high-quality patient care environment by ensuring examination rooms are clean and well-stocked.
- Policy Compliance and Safety Standards: Adhere to established policies and safety protocols.
- Assist in fostering teamwork and adherence to laboratory procedures.
- Ensure compliance with all organizational policies and document incidents as per standard procedures.
- Complete daily checklists and participate in readiness audits.
- Be proactive in undertaking additional tasks as needed.
- Training and Development: Contribute to the ongoing improvement of laboratory operations and staff training.
- Engage in continuing education opportunities.
- Assist in onboarding and training new laboratory personnel.
- Participate in initiatives aimed at enhancing the work environment and service delivery.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Proven experience in phlebotomy with demonstrated proficiency.
- Preferred 2+ years of phlebotomy experience and 6 months in specimen processing.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Completion of a phlebotomy or medical assisting program or equivalent coursework.
SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and maintain organization in a fast-paced environment.
- Competency in phlebotomy skills is required.
- Clerical experience with medical terminology, preferably in a laboratory context.
- Problem-solving skills and the ability to make informed decisions in urgent situations.
- Ability to interpret documents such as safety guidelines and research orders.
- Proficient in basic mathematical calculations.
- Exceptional customer service skills to manage a high volume of patients.
