Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Clinical Laboratory Supervisor to join our team at Brigham and Women's Hospital. The successful candidate will be responsible for the daily technical supervision of the Specialized Histopathology Services Laboratory, ensuring timely and efficient service according to established department standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide daily leadership and direction for the technical operation of the Specialized Histopathology Services Laboratory.
  • Embed, section, and stain routine and complex tissue with high quality and quantity.
  • Assist the technical staff in handling and prioritizing the daily workload.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical and employee problems with the help of the Director, when necessary.
  • Supervise the organization, scheduling, and performance of work in the laboratory.
  • Review quality control results and slide and block check documentation for accuracy and completeness.
  • Maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot all laboratory equipment.
  • Develop and maintain schedules and work assignments for laboratory staff.
  • Evaluate and update laboratory procedures, revising and reviewing procedure manuals as required.
  • Train laboratory staff and fellows, and communicate department and hospital policy to the staff.
  • Evaluate, counsel, and discipline employees in collaboration with the Director.
  • Participate in internal and external continuing education programs, and stay current regarding developments in technical instrumentation and analytical techniques in Histology.
  • Participate in the research, development, and implementation of laboratory procedures.
  • Recommend and participate in quality improvement initiatives.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalency required. Associate or Bachelor's degree in a biological or chemical science and/or completion of a NAACLS accredited histology technician training program highly desired.
  • 5 years of experience as a histology technician.
  • HT(ASCP) or HTL(ASCP) certification required.
  • Demonstrated supervisory or management experience is required.
Skills and Abilities
  • High level of ability to embed, section, and stain routine and complex tissue with high quality and quantity.
  • High level of interpretive skills.
  • Manual dexterity and good visual acuity.
  • Good organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to methodically record data with high accuracy.
  • Good interpersonal skills to interact effectively with co-workers and department staff.
  • Ability to work independently and identify potential problems and troubleshoot as necessary.
