Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Clinical Laboratory Supervisor to join our team at Brigham and Women's Hospital. The successful candidate will be responsible for the daily technical supervision of the Specialized Histopathology Services Laboratory, ensuring timely and efficient service according to established department standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide daily leadership and direction for the technical operation of the laboratory, prioritizing tasks and managing resources to meet deadlines.
  • Embed, section, and stain complex tissue samples with high accuracy and quality, demonstrating expertise in histology techniques.
  • Supervise and assist technical staff, providing guidance and support to ensure efficient workflow and high-quality results.
  • Troubleshoot technical and employee problems, collaborating with the Director to resolve issues and improve laboratory operations.
  • Develop and maintain schedules and work assignments for laboratory staff, ensuring effective use of resources and meeting departmental standards.
  • Review quality control results and slide/block check documentation, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment, ensuring optimal performance and safety.
  • Evaluate and update laboratory procedures, revising and reviewing procedure manuals as required.
  • Train laboratory staff and fellows, communicating departmental and hospital policies and procedures.
  • Collaborate with the Director to evaluate, counsel, and discipline employees, ensuring a positive and productive work environment.
  • Participate in internal and external continuing education programs, staying current with developments in technical instrumentation and analytical techniques.
  • Contribute to quality improvement initiatives, recommending and implementing changes to improve laboratory operations and patient care.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalency required; Associate or Bachelor's degree in a biological or chemical science and/or completion of a NAACLS accredited histology technician training program highly desired.
  • 5 years of experience as a histology technician, with HT(ASCP) or HTL(ASCP) certification required.
  • Demonstrated supervisory or management experience is required.
Skills and Abilities
  • High level of technical expertise in histology techniques, including embedding, sectioning, and staining.
  • Excellent interpretive skills, with ability to accurately assess tissue samples.
  • Manual dexterity and good visual acuity, with ability to work independently and prioritize tasks.
  • Good organizational skills, with ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Ability to methodically record data with high accuracy, with attention to detail and quality control.
  • Good interpersonal skills, with ability to interact effectively with co-workers and department staff.
  • Ability to work independently, with initiative to identify potential problems and troubleshoot issues.
Working Conditions

The successful candidate will work in a busy research core lab with frequent deadlines and pressure to meet turnaround time standards. The laboratory is equipped with hazardous materials, and the candidate must be able to work safely and effectively in this environment.

Frequent standing and occasional lifting of supplies are required. The candidate must be able to perform the functions of a histology technician, with knowledge of biology, chemistry, histology, immunology, and mathematics.

The candidate must have excellent organizational skills, with ability to cope with an extremely busy work schedule and handle a wide variety of techniques accurately and expeditiously.

The candidate must be able to function independently, with manual dexterity and good visual acuity, and be able to identify potential problems and troubleshoot issues as necessary.

The candidate must have aptitude for technical problem-solving, with ability to work quite independently and prioritize tasks effectively.

The candidate must have good interpersonal skills, with ability to interact effectively with physicians and technicians from other laboratories.
