SENIOR POWER SYSTEMS ENGINEER (STARLINK) SpaceX is utilizing its expertise in rocket and spacecraft development to implement Starlink, the most sophisticated broadband internet system globally.

Starlink represents the largest satellite network in existence, delivering fast and reliable internet access to over 2 million users worldwide. Our team is responsible for the design, construction, testing, and operation of all system components, including thousands of satellites, consumer receivers that allow users to connect effortlessly, and the software that integrates the entire system.

We have only begun to explore the vast potential impact of Starlink on a global scale. As we continue to enhance and expand our satellite constellation, we seek top-tier engineers to join our ranks.

Our Power Electronics team is tasked with designing and developing the power conversion and control systems that are essential to the Starlink satellites and segments of the ground systems, facilitating the high-speed, low-latency broadband internet service provided by Starlink worldwide.

As a vital member of this team, your designs will encompass a wide range of voltages, from low voltage to kilovolt levels, and power outputs from 1W to several kilowatts. Applications will include solar/MPPT, battery systems, motors/actuators, ion propulsion, laser optical links, and various vehicle systems.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide engineering expertise in the design, analysis, and testing of DC-DC power converters suitable for challenging environments.
  • Engage in electrical power system and sub-system level design evaluations and develop requirements.
  • Define and execute electrical power system verification testing and analysis.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams of design, testing, and production engineers to create innovative power electronics hardware.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering.
  • 5+ years of experience in power converter development.
  • Prior experience with DC-DC power converter development.
  • Experience working with magnetics and designing custom transformers and inductors, including planar magnetics.
  • Proficiency in modeling, simulation, and testing of power electronics.

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Master's degree in electrical engineering or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of analog control and discrete logic design.
  • Experience in modeling, simulation, and testing of power electronics.
  • Hands-on experience with voltage and current mode control and compensation design.
  • Familiarity with AC-DC converters and power factor correction.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of DC-DC topologies, with the ability to select optimal architectures and components.
  • Understanding of design for fault tolerance and reliability.
  • Familiarity with failure mode effects and criticality analysis.
  • Experience in designing wire wound and planar inductors and transformers.
  • Knowledge of power supply testing and packaging for demanding environments.
  • Experience with in-lab impedance measurement and loop-gain measurement.
  • Familiarity with spacecraft electrical power systems and knowledge of radiation effects.
  • Experience with solar arrays as input power sources.
  • Knowledge of lithium-ion battery handling, safety, and usage.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Willingness to work extended hours or weekends as necessary to meet mission-critical deadlines.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Pay range: Power Electronics Engineer/Senior: $130,000 - $180,000.00 per year. Your actual level and base salary will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on job-related knowledge and skills, education, and experience.

Base salary is just one component of your total rewards package at SpaceX. You may also be eligible for long-term incentives.
