Overview:
The role of the General Obstetrics & Gynecology Nurse Practitioner encompasses an advanced nursing position that includes executing specific tasks and services traditionally associated with the medical field, alongside responsibilities inherent to nursing.
Collaboration between nursing and medicine is essential in both education and practice, ensuring that the nurse practitioner effectively addresses the primary healthcare needs of women.
In the nursing aspects of this role, the practitioner is expected to engage in both independent and collaborative decision-making.
For expanded responsibilities that intersect with medical practice, the practitioner must work in partnership with qualified physicians under jointly approved guidelines.
Nurse practitioners must not only possess the necessary knowledge and skills but also be prepared to accept responsibility and accountability for their professional practice.
Primary care is delivered across all levels of the healthcare system, primarily in outpatient settings.The obstetric-gynecologic/women's health nurse practitioner collaborates with physicians and other healthcare team members to provide this care.
This position requires travel between various office locations.This role includes a blend of inpatient and outpatient care responsibilities.
Responsibilities:
Conduct inpatient management through consults, triage, postpartum rounds, inpatient procedures, and IUD placements.
Gather comprehensive health, psychosocial, obstetric, and gynecologic histories, documenting findings systematically and succinctly.
Perform thorough physical examinations, focusing on the reproductive system.
Order, conduct, and interpret routine laboratory tests.
Develop and implement health promotion and maintenance plans, including disease prevention and health education.
Conduct periodic health assessments for normal, non-pregnant, and asymptomatic women.
Manage clinical care for women experiencing gynecologic issues.
Provide assessment, education, and management for family planning and fertility control.
Deliver prenatal care, prioritizing both maternal and fetal health.
Offer postpartum care, emphasizing parent-infant relationships for women post-pregnancy.
Facilitate health education and counseling, focusing on the physical and psychosocial aspects of adolescence, sexuality, parenting, aging, and family life.
Collaborate with physicians to co-manage care for patients with specific health complications.
Coordinate referrals to other healthcare team members and community resources as necessary.
Review and suggest updates to nursing policies and procedures, including the development of nursing protocols.
Collaborate with the Division Director, Department Administrator, and Practice Manager to establish quality standards, meaningful use, clinical workflows, nursing education, and the delivery of exceptional patient care.
Additional duties as assigned.Qualifications:
A Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) with a nurse practitioner focus is required. Candidates must hold a valid RN license from the Virginia Board of Nursing and be a certified nurse practitioner. A minimum of three years of experience as a Nurse Practitioner is preferred, with inpatient obstetrical experience being advantageous.
