The Medical Billing and Coding Instructor, under the supervision of the Campus Director, plays a vital role in providing exceptional educational experiences to students enrolled in the medical billing and coding program. This position involves crafting lesson plans, evaluating student progress, and ensuring that the curriculum adheres to industry benchmarks while preparing students for certification examinations.
Key Responsibilities
Instruction and Curriculum Design- Conduct interactive and impactful lectures, practical training sessions, and hands-on activities covering essential topics such as medical office operations, terminology, billing processes, and relevant software applications.
- Revise and enhance the curriculum to maintain alignment with contemporary industry practices and standards.
- Develop and execute lesson plans, assignments, and assessments that promote effective learning and skill acquisition.
- Assess student performance through various methods including tests, projects, and practical exercises.
- Provide insightful feedback to facilitate students' academic and professional development.
- Offer additional tutoring to boost student success.
- Provide academic counseling and support to assist students in reaching their educational and career aspirations.
- Ensure that the program complies with all necessary regulatory and accreditation requirements.
- Prepare students for industry-recognized certification exams, such as the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS).
- Stay informed about updates in medical billing and coding standards, practices, and certification criteria.
- Engage in ongoing professional development to refine instructional skills and expand industry knowledge. Attend relevant workshops, conferences, and seminars to remain current with trends in medical office administration.
- Maintain precise records of student attendance, grades, and overall progress.
- Participate in faculty meetings, curriculum review sessions, and other departmental initiatives.
- Assist in student recruitment, orientation, and retention strategies.
- Build and sustain partnerships with healthcare industry stakeholders and employers.
- Coordinate with externship sites to provide students with practical, real-world experiences.
- Advocate for the program and its advantages to potential students and community stakeholders.
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management or a related discipline.
- Professional certification in medical billing and coding (e.g., CPC, CCS).
- A minimum of three years of hands-on experience in medical billing and coding.
- Prior teaching or training experience is preferred.
- Strong understanding of medical terminology, coding systems (ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS), and healthcare reimbursement processes.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal abilities.
- Proficiency in educational technology and learning management systems.
This role typically requires working in a classroom or lab setting. Occasional travel for professional development or industry-related events may be necessary. Some evening or weekend hours may be required to accommodate student schedules.
