Senior Infrastructure Engineers at Discover are dedicated to delivering a range of user stories, identifying technology patterns, and collaborating on potential solutions. This role enhances technical expertise through interaction and learning from engineering colleagues. You will actively manage and escalate risks and customer-impacting issues as part of your daily responsibilities.
Work Schedule: Wednesday - Saturday: 10:30 PM - 9:00 AM EST
Key Responsibilities:
- Take independent responsibility for swiftly identifying and addressing onsite risks and high-priority issues, troubleshooting incidents, managing shift turnover, incident queues, media processing, and vendor escorting.
- Collaborate with the Product Owner, Service Owner, and Subject Matter Experts to validate requirements and execute individual user stories related to onsite data center systems, including critical system installations, data room relocations, decommissions, reconfigurations, and onsite data center power down events.
- Independently execute a diverse range of user stories in various contexts. Actively contribute insights to design decisions and gain experience in understanding design trade-offs related to OSI Model Layer 1 Infrastructure design, implementation, documentation, system automation via CI/CD pipelines and APIs, capacity planning, and inventory planning.
- Demonstrate the ability to identify fundamental components of data centers and OSI Model Layer 1 Infrastructure. Recognize how changes to software/hardware functionality impact on-premises data center infrastructure services or components. Apply knowledge of various facilities and security components within the data center.
- Define and assess team documentation for process enhancement.
- Regularly participate in team agile ceremonies, lead demonstrations and presentations, assist new engineers in learning established team norms, and engage in technology communities.
- Execute a growing variety of user stories across different stages of the product lifecycle.
- Utilize automation, system tools, open-source solutions, observability, and 'security first' principles in daily tasks.
- Contribute to team agile ceremonies, lead demonstrations and presentations, and assist new engineers in acclimating to established norms.
- Comfortably implement solutions using automation, observability, and security principles.
- Engage in the adoption of new technologies.
- Pursue professional development; learn key product capabilities and strive for higher levels of craftsmanship in daily engineering tasks.
At a minimum, here's what we need from you:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Informatics, Information Security, Information Technology, or a related field.
- 1+ years of experience in Software Engineering, DevOps, or a related field.
- Internal applicants only: technical proficiency rating of advanced beginner on the Dreyfus engineering scale.
Bonus Points If You Have:
- 1-3+ years of experience deploying and maintaining complex data center environments (new facility, major renovations/expansions).
- Understanding of indoor/outdoor cable plants, including copper and fiber optic cabling.
- Knowledge of IT infrastructure components (LAN/WAN/SAN, firewalls, servers, storage, wireless).
- Familiarity with EIA/TIA, IEEE, NEC, and ISO standards related to data centers and structured cabling.
- Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with internal team members and external vendors.
- Team player and self-starter.
- Strong documentation skills to capture architecture details, procedures, and relevant data.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Bachelor's degree in CS/CIS/Network/Telecommunications or a related field or equivalent work experience.
- Data center and/or networking industry certifications preferred.
- Layer 1 Technologies (Single Mode, Multimode, Cat 5e, 6, 6A, Direct Attach Cable Assemblies, Optical Transceivers).
- Knowledge of TIA-568 and TIA-942 standards.
- Operational Support / Process Management.
- Power and Cooling Infrastructure/Fire Suppression/Physical Security/Facility Maintenance.
- Ability to write clearly, concisely, and precisely.
- Editing skills for visual needs and tools of the trade.
