Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Benefits Manager to join our team at the Teacher Retirement System of Texas. As a key member of our Benefits Services Division, you will be responsible for performing Benefit Services program administration and department operations oversight.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise a team of Employer Reporting Specialists and Employment After Retirement Specialists, providing guidance and support to ensure the successful completion of tasks and projects.
  • Participate in the overall administration of the Benefit Accounting department, monitoring quality assurance and training programs to ensure compliance with TRS laws and regulations.
  • Lead or participate on technical and special projects, working closely with the Exceptions team, Benefit Services staff, and management to achieve department goals and objectives.
  • Develop and implement procedures to improve existing processes and implement new processes, ensuring efficient and effective department operations.
  • Monitor and document performance of team members, providing regular feedback and coaching to ensure individual and team success.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Seven years of full-time, progressively responsible experience in banking, accounting, benefit reporting, or related experience.
  • Three years of experience coordinating, leading, or supervising the work of others.
  • Experience may be concurrent.
  • A master's degree or doctoral degree in a closely related field may be substituted on an equivalent year-for-year basis.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Three years of progressive experience in TRS Benefit Reporting and/or Exceptions.
  • Experience reviewing government, legal, or financial documents.
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel.
Knowledge and Skills
  • TRS laws, regulations, policies, procedures, processes, and systems.
  • TRS benefit programs.
  • Reviewing documentation; interpreting and applying complex laws, regulations, rules, and policies; and making decisions based on sound judgment.
  • Leading, organizing, and motivating staff to meet productivity and quality goals and objectives.
  • Planning, organizing, and prioritizing work assignments to manage a high-volume workload in a fast-paced and changing environment.
Ability to Work in a Team Environment

The ideal candidate will be able to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with co-workers, agency staff, and external contacts, and work effectively in a professional team environment.
