Key Responsibilities:

Nurses working in residential care settings are tasked with administering medications, reviewing Medication Administration Records (MARs) to ensure effective medication management, and addressing or resolving crisis situations while adhering to the Nurse Delegation Program.

Essential Knowledge:
  • Understanding of psychiatric disorders affecting adults
  • Familiarity with general and psychiatric nursing practices
  • Basic comprehension of medical terminology relevant to adult psychiatric care
  • Awareness of psychopharmacology and the administration of psychotropic medications to adults
  • Expertise in behavior management and crisis intervention techniques, including non-violent crisis intervention
  • Knowledge of educational strategies suitable for adults with severe and persistent psychiatric conditions
  • Appreciation for cultural diversity
  • Successful completion of Medication Assistance Supervision (MAS)
  • Familiarity with DMH/NDP program standards
  • Proficiency in utilizing electronic health records
Physical Job Requirements:

This role involves frequent standing to access files and distribute medications. Sitting is common, with durations of 5-10 minutes, but may extend to 1.5 to 3 hours for documentation tasks. Walking may be required over various distances, occasionally up to 300 feet for medication dispensing.

Frequent squatting or lunging is necessary to stock supplies and retrieve materials from storage. A strong grip is essential for maneuvering large carts while accessing consumer files, while lighter grip strength is needed for stocking supplies, requiring a force exertion of up to 10 pounds. Fine motor skills are necessary for writing, handling paperwork, and dispensing medications.

Occasional lifting of 40-50 pounds from floor to waist is required, along with the ability to lift lighter weights frequently.

Primary Functions:

Clinical duties include administering medications while observing the Seven Rights of medication administration, monitoring consumers for potential side effects, and reporting findings to the physician. Providing medication education to consumers and their families is essential, including information on uses and potential side effects.

Daily review of MARs is necessary to ensure proper medication management, including timely refills and coordination with medical staff for new prescriptions. Identifying the psychiatric and medical needs of consumers and effectively communicating with physicians is crucial.

Observing consumer behavior during group activities and interactions, and ensuring proper information transfer between shifts is part of the role. Active participation in the interdisciplinary treatment plan development with the multi-disciplinary team is expected.

Monitoring laboratory results and reporting any abnormal findings to the physician is essential. The ability to recognize crisis situations and effectively deescalate them, including providing emergency care as needed, is required.

Conducting infection control training for consumers and maintaining compliance with the Nurse Delegation Program, including recertification requirements, is necessary. Assisting consumers with personal care needs, such as bathing and hygiene, is also part of the role.

Documentation and Record Keeping:

Timely and accurate documentation of nursing services provided to consumers is required, in accordance with AltaPointe policy. Documentation must be clear and concise, with all forms and logs completed accurately and updated as necessary.

Professional Conduct:

Maintaining courteous and respectful interactions with consumers, visitors, and colleagues is essential. Treating consumers with dignity and compassion, respecting their privacy and confidentiality, and being cooperative with others are fundamental aspects of this role.

Qualifications:

Candidates must hold a current LPN license in the state of Alabama and possess a valid driver's license.
