Key Responsibilities:

  • Abide by and enforce all compliance requirements and hospital policies and procedures, including those pertaining to confidentiality.
  • Demonstrate CPR according to American Heart Association standards.
  • Provide direct patient care according to unit-specific competencies.
  • Perform therapeutic procedures or assist with diagnostic procedures, including catheterization, NG insertion/lavage, dressing changes, blood glucose monitoring, trach care, and airway management.
  • Administer medications, including controlled substances, by all routes except IV push.
  • Respond appropriately to emergency patient situations.
  • Initiate IV therapy and NG insertion after completion of approved IV Therapy and NG insertion course.
  • Manage patients requiring mechanical ventilation.
  • Assist with any orthopedic appliances.
  • Perform skilled procedures and state the purpose, rationale, precautions, and observations related to that procedure.
  • Assist with patient/family education by reviewing and enforcing established education plans.
  • Utilize a PC or terminal to access the Hospital Information System.
  • Assist with IV therapy within scope of practice, including IV site rotation per policy, labeling IV site and tubing per policy, and assisting with medications and treatments as needed.
  • Assist with direct patient care as needed.
  • Maintain accurate and complete medical records by utilizing the correct documentation tools and procedures, assisting with the completion of MAK/MAR, and completing the flow chart, including signature.
  • Adhere to current Infection Control and Safety Standards.
  • Communicate and use appropriate customer relation skills with physicians, patients, families, and members of the healthcare team in person and via telephone.
  • Respond to overhead pages.
  • Participate on committees as assigned.
  • Participate in performance improvement activities through quality measurement or participation in PDSA processes as assigned.
  • Regular and prompt attendance.
  • Ability to work schedule as defined and overtime and call as required.

Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited school of practical nursing meeting the minimum standards set by the State of Alabama.
  • Current Alabama Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license or current Multi-State LPN License in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) for Alabama.
