About the Baytown Complex

Baytown, Texas, with a population exceeding 77,000, is situated in the Gulf Coast region, just east of Houston. Residents and workers in Baytown enjoy a rich historical backdrop and abundant outdoor activities, thanks to its proximity to beautiful waterways, including Galveston Bay and the San Jacinto River.

Established in 1919, ExxonMobil's Baytown Complex spans approximately 3,400 acres along the Houston Ship Channel, about 25 miles from Houston. With a workforce of over 8,500, it encompasses four manufacturing sites, including the Baytown Refinery, one of the largest in the U.S., and the Baytown Olefins Plant, a leading ethylene production facility globally.

The complex produces a variety of products, including fuels, lubricants, and chemical compounds utilized in numerous applications, from automotive components to pharmaceuticals and packaging materials.

The integration of our Baytown facilities enhances efficiency, enabling us to innovate cleaner fuel technologies while prioritizing safety and reliability.

Role Overview

The Unit Inspector serves as the primary contact for designated units, responsible for executing or overseeing inspection activities within those areas.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct API-510 and API-570 inspections on fixed assets (vessels and piping systems) within assigned areas.
  • Draft inspection reports and provide repair recommendations for pressure equipment and piping in the Refinery/Petrochemical sectors.
  • Collaborate with Engineering to assess inspection findings, determine corrective measures, and ensure the implementation of those recommendations.
  • Supervise the safe and timely execution of inspection tasks performed by Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) teams.
  • Engage in Process, Mechanical, Technical, and Engineering (PMTE) teams for assigned units, offering technical inspection support.
  • Analyze failures of pressure equipment and piping in the Refinery/Petrochemical environments.
  • Review proposed equipment modifications from an inspection perspective.
  • Conduct corrosion rate assessments and remaining life evaluations on inspected assets.
  • Assist in formulating annual inspection expense budgets for assigned units.
  • Contribute to the development of Fixed Equipment Strategies.
  • Prepare work lists, carry out inspections, and collaborate with engineering to finalize recommendations during turnarounds.
Qualifications

Essential Skills
  • At least 5 years of experience in inspection execution or planning within a Refinery or Petrochemical facility.
  • Certification in at least one API standard (API-510, 570, or 653) is required.
  • Strong understanding of API 580.
Preferred Skills
  • Preferred certifications include API-510, API-570, and API-653.
  • Familiarity with ASME Sec. VIII D1 and ASME B31.3 is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of various testing methods, including Penetrant Testing, Magnetic Particle Testing, Ultrasonic Thickness Testing, and Radiography.
  • Understanding of corrosion mechanisms and metallurgy relevant to Refinery/Petrochemical operations.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Experience with computerized inspection record-keeping systems.
  • Demonstrated leadership and teamwork capabilities.
  • Ability to interpret piping isometric drawings, P&IDs, and vessel schematics.
  • Proven problem identification and resolution skills.
