About the Baytown Complex

Baytown, Texas, with a population exceeding 77,000, is situated in the Gulf Coast region of the United States, just east of Houston. Residents and workers in Baytown enjoy a rich historical backdrop and numerous outdoor activities due to its proximity to beautiful waterways, including Galveston Bay, the San Jacinto River, and Buffalo Bayou.

Established in 1919, ExxonMobil's Baytown Complex spans approximately 3,400 acres along the Houston Ship Channel, about 25 miles east of Houston. With a workforce of over 8,500, it consists of four manufacturing sites, including one in Mont Belvieu, and a global technology center. This includes the Baytown Refinery, one of the largest refineries in the United States, and the Baytown Olefins Plant, one of the largest ethylene production facilities worldwide.

The products manufactured here encompass fuels, lubricating oils, and chemical compounds utilized in a wide array of applications, from automotive battery cases and diapers to pharmaceuticals and food packaging.

Role Overview

The primary responsibility of the Equipment Inspection Specialist is to serve as the main point of contact for the designated units and oversee the execution of inspection activities in those areas.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct API-510 and API-570 inspections on fixed equipment (including vessels and piping systems) for assigned areas.
  • Prepare inspection reports and provide repair recommendations for pressure equipment and piping in the Refinery/Petrochemical sector.
  • Collaborate with Engineering to assess inspection outcomes, determine corrective actions, and ensure the implementation of those recommendations.
  • Supervise the safe, efficient, and timely completion of inspection tasks performed by Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) teams.
  • Engage in Process, Mechanical, Technical, and Engineering (PMTE) teams for assigned units, offering technical inspection support.
  • Analyze failures of pressure equipment and piping within the Refinery/Petrochemical context.
  • Review proposed equipment modifications from an inspection perspective.
  • Conduct corrosion rate assessments and remaining life evaluations on inspected equipment.
  • Assist in formulating annual inspection expense budgets for assigned units.
  • Contribute to the development of Fixed Equipment Strategies.
  • Generate work lists, execute inspections, and collaborate with engineering to finalize recommendations during turnarounds.
Qualifications

Essential Skills
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in inspection execution or planning within a Refinery or Petrochemical environment.
  • Candidates must hold at least one API certification (API-510, 570, or 653).
  • Strong understanding of API 580 is required.
Preferred Skills
  • Certifications in API-510, API-570, and API-653 are advantageous.
  • Familiarity with ASME Sec. VIII D1 and ASME B31.3 is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Penetrant Testing, Magnetic Particle Testing, Ultrasonic Thickness Testing, and Radiography/Radiographic Film Interpretation.
  • Understanding of corrosion mechanisms and metallurgy relevant to Refinery/Petrochemical facilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with computerized inspection databases for record-keeping.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities and experience in team collaboration.
  • Ability to interpret piping isometric drawings, P&IDs, and vessel drawings.
  • Proven problem identification and resolution skills.
