Position Overview: Senior Plumbing Systems Engineer


The Building Engineering Services Group (BES) offers mechanical, electrical, plumbing, site civil, structural, and specialty design services for a diverse range of buildings, including public, municipal, private, and federal projects across various sectors.

Our experienced team specializes in market sectors such as Healthcare, Science and Technology, Data Centers, Higher Education, Federal, Transportation, Water, and Resource facilities, ensuring engineering excellence for our clients.

Key Responsibilities

As a Senior Plumbing Systems Engineer, you will be responsible for:

  • Overseeing the plumbing, medical gas, and laboratory gas components of intricate projects, including healthcare facilities, research centers, data centers, and more.
  • Independently assessing, selecting, and implementing standard and advanced engineering methodologies to address a wide array of plumbing design challenges.
  • Completing the design of plumbing systems, encompassing domestic cold and hot water, sanitary drainage and vent systems, storm drainage, medical gas, laboratory gas, pumping systems, water treatment, reclaimed water, and natural gas distribution.
  • Managing all aspects of the project, including drawings and specifications, adhering to schedules and budgets, and guiding assigned personnel.
  • Engaging with clients and contractors to ensure project alignment.
  • Interpreting engineering data for designers and drafters.
  • Conducting ongoing checks of drawings to guarantee accuracy and completeness, overseeing deliverables for quality assurance.
  • Mentoring and developing the skills of junior designers and drafters.
  • Monitoring project schedules and budgets effectively.
  • Performing field verification and assessments of existing systems for renovation projects.
  • Reviewing and summarizing relevant codes for inclusion in project design, drawings, and specifications.
  • Coordinating plumbing work with other disciplines and consultants.
  • Reviewing shop drawings and addressing requests for information.
  • Preparing periodic project status updates for the Project Manager and Department Director.
  • Drafting project specifications as needed for plumbing scopes of work.
  • Visiting project sites as required to oversee construction progress and resolve field issues.
  • Executing additional duties as necessary.

Qualifications

To be considered for this role, candidates should possess:

  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in plumbing system design, including code review and interpretation.
  • In-depth knowledge of applicable building and NFPA Codes related to plumbing systems.
  • Exceptional organizational and communication skills.
  • A proactive attitude with the ability to work independently and collaboratively within a large project team.
  • A strong motivation, excellent organizational skills, and a commitment to actively participate in our employee-owned culture.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred; candidates without a PE license will hold the title of Senior Plumbing Designer.
  • Certifications such as CPD, GPD, LEED AP, and/or Medical Gas Designer are advantageous.
  • Experience in fire protection systems design, including wet, dry, and specialty systems is a plus.
  • Proficiency in Revit is beneficial.
