Position Overview:


The Surgical Services Core Technician, under the supervision of the Clinical Manager, Charge Nurse, or Registered Nurse, is tasked with the efficient and hygienic turnover of surgical suites between procedures, ensuring compliance with all infection prevention standards and protocols.

This role requires training and proficiency in preparing, stocking, and organizing supplies and equipment for sterile procedures within the surgical department. The Surgical Services Core Technician will manage equipment and utilize supplies for general cleaning tasks. Additionally, they will provide technical support as directed.

The Surgical Services Core Technician may also assist with housekeeping responsibilities in public areas and other designated spaces, and may be assigned to support patient transport to and from surgical services, along with other duties as required.


Key Responsibilities:
Patient Support

  • Assist in transferring patients from the operating room bed to the recovery bed.
  • Respond promptly and professionally to emergency situations.
  • Demonstrate visual and auditory acuity, and the ability to assess, document, and implement necessary actions to meet patient and family needs.
  • Prioritize and address technical requirements to fulfill departmental needs.
  • Effectively engage with ill and disabled patients of all ages, including bilingual patients and those in emotional distress, while collaborating with hospital staff.
  • Navigate varying and unpredictable situations with tact when interacting with personnel, patients, family members, visitors, and the public.
Equipment and Inventory Oversight

  • Assist in setting up operating room beds for procedures, including various specialized beds.
  • Return case carts and instruments to the sterile processing department for cleaning after procedures.
  • Possess knowledge of operating room case systems, patient-related supplies, materials, and equipment, and proactively resolve supply-related issues.
  • Ensure surgical instruments and power equipment sets are stored correctly, maintaining adequate backup stock of single instruments in the sterile supply area.
  • Handle and maintain equipment and supplies appropriately.
  • Exhibit knowledge in the use of departmental medical equipment; refer to unit-specific competency documentation.
  • Clean and reassemble equipment as necessary.
  • Provide troubleshooting support for equipment issues.
Cleaning and Maintenance Duties

  • Conduct daily cleaning of operating room suites, turnovers, core areas, sterile instrument rooms, and general workspaces within the surgical department, adhering to strict infection prevention standards.
  • During turnovers, assist with bed making, trash removal, changing anesthesia circuits, and restocking anesthesia supplies as required.
  • Monitor turnover systems for room readiness, performing tasks such as removing all equipment, cleaning and disinfecting beds, and preparing the room for the next procedure.
  • Follow instructions from the Charge Nurse for cleaning infectious patient rooms, emphasizing speed and efficiency.
  • Clean glass, monitors, and equipment screens using appropriate cleaning agents to prevent streaking.
  • Request maintenance for any observed equipment malfunctions or damage.
  • Organize and maintain cleanliness of carts and closets in accordance with departmental procedures, including linens and waste disposal.
  • Notify the Supervisor when supplies are low or not functioning properly, and stock necessary items in surgical services.
Communication and Documentation

  • Provide shift change reports to incoming technicians, highlighting any issues such as missing or damaged items, and share relevant information from surgical staff.
  • Communicate effectively with RNs, OR Technicians, or Supervisors/Managers regarding needs and updates.
  • Maintain strong organizational skills and adhere strictly to infection prevention standards.
  • Inform the Charge Nurse when taking breaks or at the end of the shift to ensure proper coverage in the operating room.
Compliance and Safety

  • Report any safety-related incidents promptly using the designated reporting tools; participate in all safety training programs; perform work safely; monitor the work environment for potential safety issues and ensure compliance by others.
  • Follow safety guidelines regarding contact precautions and policies related to bloodborne pathogens.
  • Adhere to regulatory and organizational standards impacting patient care and safety, as well as all hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Stay informed and comply with state and federal regulations that affect the responsibilities of the position.
  • Ensure all required certifications and licenses are current and valid.
  • Complete all mandatory training modules and job-specific training within the designated timeframe.

Qualifications:

Education:
High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent experience - Required

Certification and Licensure:
BLS - Required within introductory period

CSCT certification - Required for Surgical Services Core Technician 2

Certification/registration in Sterile Processing Distribution - Preferred

Employees must obtain and maintain appropriate clinical competencies as assigned by departmental leadership.

Experience:
SPD Tech 2 status - Preferred
