Job Overview

Position Summary

The Surgical Room Technician, under the guidance of the Clinical Manager, Charge Nurse, or RN, is tasked with the efficient and hygienic turnover of surgical suites between procedures, adhering strictly to all infection prevention standards and protocols. This role requires training and proficiency in preparing, stocking, and managing supplies and equipment for sterile procedures within the surgical department. The Surgical Room Technician will also operate cleaning equipment and manage supplies during general cleaning operations. Additionally, this position may involve assisting with patient transport to and from surgical services and performing other assigned duties.


Key Responsibilities

Patient Support
* Assist in transferring patients from the operating room bed to recovery beds.

Respond promptly to emergencies and crises in a professional manner. * Maintain visual and auditory acuity to assess, document, and implement necessary actions to meet patient and family needs.

Prioritize and address technical requirements to fulfill departmental needs.

Effectively interact with patients of all ages, including those who are ill, disabled, or emotionally distressed, as well as their families and hospital staff.

Manage unpredictable situations tactfully with patients, families, visitors, and the general public.

Equipment and Supply Management
* Assist in setting up operating room beds for procedures, including various specialized beds.

Return case carts and instruments to the sterile processing department for cleaning after procedures.

Possess knowledge of operating room case systems, patient-related supplies, and equipment. Anticipate and resolve supply-related issues.

Ensure surgical instruments and power equipment are stored correctly. Conduct inventory checks to maintain adequate backup stock of single instruments in the sterile supply area.

Handle and maintain equipment and supplies appropriately.

Demonstrate proficiency in using departmental medical equipment; refer to unit-specific competency documentation. * Clean and reassemble equipment as necessary.

Provide troubleshooting assistance for equipment issues.


Cleaning and Maintenance
* Conduct daily cleaning of operating room suites, turnovers, core areas, sterile instrument rooms, and general workspaces within the surgical department, adhering to strict infection prevention standards.

During turnovers, assist with bed-making, trash removal, changing anesthesia circuits, and restocking supplies as required.

Monitor systems for room turnovers and discharges, performing tasks such as removing all equipment, cleaning and disinfecting beds, and wiping down equipment.

Follow instructions from the Charge Nurse for cleaning infectious patient rooms, ensuring efficiency in these tasks.
* Clean glass, monitors, and equipment screens using appropriate cleaning agents to prevent streaking.

Request maintenance for any observed equipment malfunctions or damages.

Organize and maintain cleanliness of carts and closets according to departmental procedures, including linens and waste disposal in designated areas.

Notify supervisors when supplies are low or not functioning adequately. Stock fluids in warmers and ensure blankets and gowns are available as needed.


Communication and Reporting
* Provide shift change reports to the incoming technician. Report any issues (actual or potential) to the charge nurse, including missing or damaged items, or any other relevant information from surgical staff.

Communicate needs effectively with RNs, OR Technicians, or Supervisors/Managers.

Exhibit strong organizational skills and adhere strictly to infection prevention standards.

Inform the Charge Nurse when taking breaks or at the end of shifts to ensure adequate coverage in the operating room.


Compliance and Safety
* Responsible for reporting any safety incidents promptly through the designated reporting tool; participate in all safety training programs; perform work safely; monitor the work environment for potential safety hazards and ensure compliance among colleagues.

Follow safety guidelines regarding contact precautions and all policies related to bloodborne pathogens.

Adhere to regulatory and organizational standards affecting patient care and safety, as well as all hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Practice in a safe and cost-effective manner.

Stay current with state and federal regulations and company policies relevant to the role. * Ensure all required certifications and licenses are maintained and valid.

Complete all mandatory training modules and job-specific training within the required timeframe.


Qualifications

Education:

High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent experience - Required

Certification and Licensure:

BLS - Required within the introductory period

CSCT certification - Required for advanced Surgical Room Technician roles

Certification/registration in Sterile Processing Distribution - Preferred

Maintain appropriate clinical competencies as assigned by departmental leadership.

Experience:

Preferred SPD Technician 2 status
