About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated Research Scientist to join our AI for Science team. As a Research Scientist, you will work closely with our Hardware and Software Engineers to discover, invent, solve, and prototype cutting-edge AI and machine learning solutions for critically important problems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Participate in cutting-edge research in artificial intelligence and machine learning applications, particularly in computational chemistry and material science.
  • Develop ML/AI solutions for real-world problems and prototype sensors and hardware.
  • Provide research input on early explorations, determining the scope of the problem, the best use of ML, and the merits of different approaches.
  • Guide data needs, including size, type, and variability.
  • Integrate the latest research into applied projects.
  • Collaborate with Software and Hardware Engineers to design and run experiments.
  • Design and critically evaluate new algorithms.
  • Act as a liaison between our team and the broader research and academic community, as well as Alphabet's other research groups.
Requirements
  • PhD in Computer Science or a related technical field.
  • 5 years of experience in Computer Vision, Machine Learning, Optimization, and Machine Intelligence, with at least 2 years of experience applying these techniques in chemistry and materials science.
  • Programming experience in Python, C++, or other relevant languages.
  • Research contributions, including publishing papers in machine learning venues.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Relevant work experience in industry or academia.
  • Strong publication record.
  • Projects with interdisciplinary nature, including deep knowledge of at least one physical science domain.
  • Experience with ML pipelines, experiments, and system evaluation.
  • Programming experience with TensorFlow or similar frameworks.
  • Ability to design and execute on a research agenda.
  • Ability to work in small teams, under ambiguity, and with limited supervision.
