Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Accountant I to join our team at the City of Petersburg, VA. As an Accountant I, you will play a critical role in maintaining and preparing complex financial records, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of our financial data.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review and audit vendor invoices for accuracy and completeness
  • Process vendor payments and manage the City's check runs
  • Review and process W-9 and 1099 forms for all vendors
  • Audit employee reimbursements to ensure compliance with City, State, and Federal guidelines
  • Manage the City's vendor accounts and resolve accounting discrepancies
  • Communicate with vendors and other departments to resolve payment issues and inquiries
  • Research and analyze accounts payable entries and reports to identify and correct errors
  • Assist with the preparation of the City's Annual Comprehensive Financial Report
  • Provide customer service and technical assistance
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, business administration, finance, or a related field
  • Minimum 4 years of related work experience in accounting or finance, preferably in a government setting
  • Familiarity with Bright Municipal Accounting Software or financial database software
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills
Preferred Qualifications
  • 10-point compensable veteran
  • 5-point veteran
  • Valid Driver's License issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia or another state with reciprocity
  • Working knowledge of the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) and its applications
