Position Overview

The Heavy Equipment Operator is tasked with the operation of various machinery for groundwork and construction activities. This role involves proficiency in both the front and rear operations of the equipment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate heavy machinery of differing sizes and weights with safety and efficiency.
  • Adhere to all company policies and OSHA/MSHA regulations to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Report any equipment issues to the Foreman, Superintendent, Safety Manager, or Human Resources Manager.
  • Follow the Foreman’s instructions regarding daily tasks and project expectations.
  • Conduct minor maintenance and servicing of equipment; escalate major issues to the supervisor.
  • Perform daily pre-and-post operational inspections with proper documentation as per company policies.
  • Assist in mentoring less-experienced personnel on equipment operation, maintenance, and repair.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance at scheduled times.
  • Execute additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

To excel in this role, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • High School diploma or GED preferred.
  • 1-2 years of experience in construction is required.
  • Ability to multitask safely.

Work Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment physical, drug screening, and background check is mandatory.
  • Strict compliance with safety protocols as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
  • Willingness to collaborate in a team setting and assist colleagues or supervisors as needed.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license that meets state regulations, including possible CDL, Class A and/or B with hazmat and tanker endorsements.
  • Flexibility to travel and work away from home when necessary.
  • Availability to work nights and weekends as required.
  • Compliance with personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements in designated operational areas as per OSHA/MSHA standards.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Proficient in operating heavy machinery.
  • Familiarity with construction materials, methods, and tools.
  • Understanding of safety hazards and precautions related to heavy equipment operations.
  • Knowledge of trenching and shoring standards.
  • Ability to operate machinery safely under various conditions.
  • Competence in basic math for record-keeping and blueprint interpretation.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions effectively.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Capability to operate complex machinery requiring independent judgment.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands for this position include:

  • Ability to stand, walk, use hands and fingers to manipulate controls, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, and hear.
  • Potential for extended periods of sitting.
  • Vision abilities (with correction) including close, distance, peripheral, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
  • Capability to climb ladders and work at heights.
  • Ability to work in various weather conditions.
  • Must be able to exert 10-20 lbs. of force constantly, 25-50 lbs. frequently, and more occasionally.

Work Environment

While performing job duties, employees may encounter:

  • Occasional exposure to fumes, airborne particles, and hazardous chemicals.
  • Exposure to moving mechanical parts, high places, outdoor weather conditions, and electrical hazards.
  • Noise levels that may be loud in certain areas, but generally moderate.
