Position Overview

The Asphalt Paving Machine Operator plays a crucial role in the construction industry, focusing on the operation of paving machinery and screed systems to evenly distribute and level asphalt on various surfaces such as highways, private roads, parking lots, and driveways.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate the asphalt paver, making necessary adjustments to achieve the correct depth, grade, and finish of asphalt material using screed extensions.
  • Communicate effectively with construction equipment operators to ensure proper alignment and movement of materials.
  • Support the construction and paving team with tasks including shoveling, raking, and operating wheelbarrows.
  • Collaborate with crew members to apply asphalt according to project specifications and assist in various roles as directed by the crew foreman to meet daily production goals.
  • Adhere to all company policies and safety regulations as outlined by OSHA/MSHA to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Report any operational issues to the Foreman, Superintendent, Safety Manager, or Human Resources Manager.
  • Follow the Foreman’s instructions regarding daily tasks and project expectations.
  • Conduct minor maintenance and servicing of equipment, referring significant issues to the supervisor.
  • Perform daily pre-and-post operational inspections, documenting findings in compliance with company policies.
  • Assist in training less-experienced personnel on equipment operation, maintenance, and repair.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance at assigned work times.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

To excel in this role, candidates must demonstrate the ability to fulfill essential duties effectively.

Education and Experience

  • High School diploma or GED preferred.
  • 1-2 years of experience in asphalt operations required.
  • Resume required to showcase relevant knowledge and experience.

Work Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment physical, drug screening, and background check is required.
  • Strict adherence to safety protocols as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
  • Willingness to work collaboratively in a team environment and assist colleagues or supervisors as needed.
  • Availability to travel and work away from home when necessary.
  • Flexibility to work nights and weekends as required.
  • Compliance with personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements in designated operational areas as mandated by OSHA/MSHA.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Proficient in operating heavy machinery.
  • Familiarity with construction materials, methods, and tools.
  • Understanding of safety hazards and precautions associated with heavy equipment operations.
  • Knowledge of trenching and shoring standards.
  • Ability to operate equipment safely and efficiently in various conditions.
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills for record-keeping and understanding project documents.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions accurately.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Capability to operate complex machinery requiring skill and independent judgment.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands of this position include:

  • Ability to stand, walk, and use hands to manipulate controls or objects.
  • Capability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, and hear.
  • Vision requirements include close, distance, peripheral, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Able to work at heights and in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to exert varying levels of force to move objects as required.

Work Environment

While performing job duties, employees may be exposed to:

  • Fumes, airborne particles, and potentially hazardous chemicals.
