Job Overview

As a Controls and Automation Specialist at West Fraser, you will be instrumental in enhancing the automation and predictive control systems (AI) across our OSB and lumber production facilities by delivering remote technical assistance for daily operations. Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Monitoring critical devices such as electrical and mechanical components, circuitry, controls, and robotics from our Greenville office, while providing support for service, repair, and calibration across multiple OSB and lumber mills.
  • Diagnosing and resolving system issues, aiding in breakdown recovery efforts.
  • Assisting with the installation of new and replacement equipment.
  • Offering programming support for routine process modifications.
  • Troubleshooting in collaboration with onsite technicians as necessary.
  • Logging system issues or requests for assistance from automated system monitors or mill personnel.
  • Facilitating upgrades to meet enhanced automation and digitization standards, including providing onsite support for infrastructure installation and commissioning.
  • Implementing and maintaining systems such as West Fraser Analytics System (NAS), Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), Model Predictive Control (MPC), and Rockwell ECO System across all facilities.

In addition, you will contribute to continuous improvement and project management initiatives by:

  • Developing PLC programs and HMIs in line with West Fraser standards and capital expense guidelines.
  • Providing data and support for mill-level project analysis and execution.
  • Configuring tags and templates for process data collection, trending, and reporting.
  • Auditing changes within the mill automation environment.
  • Ensuring firmware and software revisions are current.
  • Supporting the Automation team as required.

Qualifications:

  • An Associate's degree or higher in Mechatronics, Industrial Electrical, Engineering Technology, or equivalent experience as a Technician with strong programming and technical skills, preferably with OSB experience.
  • A collaborative mindset, technological proficiency (experience with collaboration tools), and a willingness to learn.
  • Preferred experience with VMware ESX, virtualization, and other computer science fundamentals.
  • Proficiency in programming and troubleshooting Programmable Logic Controllers (preferably Rockwell ControlLogix).
  • Ability to visualize physical processes to assist field personnel remotely with setup and troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with programming languages such as VB, SQL, Python, or JSON is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of, or eagerness to learn about, the OSB and lumber manufacturing processes.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information to diverse audiences.
  • Flexibility to work shifts and variable schedules to support a 24/7 manufacturing operation.
  • Capability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Willingness to travel up to 20% to mill locations.
