Position Overview


At Stony Brook University, our Healthcare Assistant Trainees / Certified Nursing Assistants play a crucial role in delivering compassionate and high-quality care to our residents, upholding the highest standards of integrity and respect.

Under the guidance of a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse, Healthcare Assistant Trainees / Certified Nursing Assistants engage regularly with residents to assist with their daily living activities.


Ideal candidates will possess strong communication and interpersonal skills, along with a solid understanding of resident care. They should be capable of responding effectively to the needs of our residents, making decisions rooted in ethical principles while aligning with our Mission, Vision, and Values.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist residents with daily living activities, ensuring personal hygiene and basic human needs are met to create a supportive and comfortable environment.
  • As instructed by professional staff, safely move, position, lift, and transport residents using various aids to enhance their comfort and facilitate treatment.
  • Engage with residents through conversation, encouraging their participation in treatment activities to foster positive attitudes towards rehabilitation.
  • Occasionally transport residents and necessary supplies.
  • Uphold residents' rights, dignity, and confidentiality at all times.
  • Perform light housekeeping duties related to direct care to maintain a clean and sanitary environment.
  • Participate in mandatory quarterly training sessions to maintain certification and fulfill re-certification requirements every two years.

Required Qualifications:
SG-8 Certified Nursing Assistant

New York State Nurse Aide Certification.

Preferred Qualifications:
One year of experience in healthcare, particularly in long-term care settings. Proficient computer skills and excellent written and verbal communication abilities.

Required Qualifications:
SG-6 Nursing Assistant Trainee

Ability to acquire necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities during the probationary period.

Essential Requirements:

Must have completed a State-approved Nurse Aide training program and be scheduled to take the nurse aide competency examinations at the next available opportunity.

Certification must be obtained within four months of hire or completion of the training program.


Working Conditions:


Employees may encounter exposure to infectious diseases, bodily fluids, and other challenging situations. They may also be required to manage unpredictable emergencies and crisis scenarios. Irregular hours and pressures from multiple inquiries may occur.

Prior to employment, candidates must successfully complete a pre-employment physical examination and meet all regulatory screening requirements.
